The fediverse is bigger than Truth Social and most of it isn't even a company... just a bunch of nerds running their own social network on pocket change (as it should be) and the content here is chefs kiss so much nicer.

Maybe we should "go public" too LMAO.

@jetton@mastodon.online avatar

@futurebird

Truth Social has < 1 million monthly active users.
Truth Social supposedly worth $5 billion.
Mastodon alone has > 2 million monthly users.

Math is complicated, so I'll let others calculate the dollar value of the Fediverse.

tshirtman,
@tshirtman@mas.to avatar

@jetton @futurebird even factoring in the exploitable guillibility of the average truth social user, i have a hard time getting anywhere close to that supposed value. Sure, you’ll be able to extract a few thousands of some of them, but on average? certainly a lot less than that.

The price is only justified by people buying as a way to transfer money to trump, who is the main beneficiary of that inflated value.

not2b,
@not2b@sfba.social avatar

@tshirtman The share price has been dropping like a rock, and it hasn't finished dropping yet.

tshirtman, (edited )
@tshirtman@mas.to avatar

@not2b yeah, i have a look about every day, indeed today makes me even happier than yesterday, i won’t be able to stop laughing if it crashes to a reasonable value (5% of the current price or less) before trump can cash in, he’ll be blemish, the chance of being an actual billionaire, having gone just under his nose, it’ll be quite the meltdown.

OrionKidder,
@OrionKidder@mas.to avatar

@tshirtman @jetton @futurebird Oh absolutely. There's no other plausible explanation for that price.

jetton,
@jetton@mastodon.online avatar

@tshirtman @futurebird

A company that pays its board and top execs more than its annual revenue and has losses > 12x revenue is really not worth anything.

Except to those gullible enough to follow Trump.

jetton,
@jetton@mastodon.online avatar

@tshirtman @futurebird

The previous time DJT was used as a ticker symbol was on the NY stock exchange. The stock lost 99.5 % of its value by the time it was dropped from the exchange. It lost > $ 1 billion but somehow the founder made $44 million.
Wonder whose stock that was…*

@tshirtman @futurebird

In case the suspense is too much, the company was Trump Hotels and Casino Resorts.

Many, many people come up to me with tears in their eyes, big strong men who have never cried in their lives, saying "how can he lose money from casinos?"

He didn't.

tshirtman,
@tshirtman@mas.to avatar

@jetton @futurebird oh yeah, i know it was about him, but many failed business to keep track of! 😆

Grifter gonna grift, what i find fascinating, is how he always get his way, and always come out on top, and no matter how many loyal people get burned on the way to save his ass, there are still more on line ready, hoping it’ll be different from them, and they’ll benefit from his "success".

dgoldsmith,
@dgoldsmith@mastodon.social avatar

@jetton @futurebird Unfortunately, all the data sources I've checked (fedidb.org, joinmastodon.org) say Mastodon's MAU is around 870K, with the Fediverse as a whole at 1M.

futurebird,
@futurebird@sauropods.win avatar

It is slightly embarrassing they use the same software, though I think that just makes "Truth" "Social" look bad and us look better. We have the same software as a billion dollar social media company! What more do people want!

In a sense, "Truth" "Social" is a rogue highly unpopular spambot fediverse instance that no one wants to federate with, so the fact that you can't hasn't even really been noticed.

jochie,
@jochie@strangeweb.page avatar

@futurebird rogue? :homerhide:

kellogh,
@kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

@jochie @futurebird no, rouge. we caught TFG rouge handed

madeindex,
@madeindex@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird
Can you explain fediverse a bit more please? Everybody here uses it but the Wikipedia Article is a bit confusing 😅
So far i think fediverse = de-central social networks like mastodon?

futurebird,
@futurebird@sauropods.win avatar

@madeindex

That's correct, think of it as the largest contiguous island of federated servers-- and it has blurry edges since every server has it's own rules about how we federate-- and individual users have further preferences.

But to the extent something could "go viral" in this space it's the landmass of loosely tied rafts over which that information might spread.

kellogh,
@kellogh@hachyderm.io avatar

@futurebird you might say we already are public, THE public

llewelly,
@llewelly@sauropods.win avatar

@futurebird I suspect there will be IPOs of a few fediverse servers eventually. And I suspect they'll all be toxic trash. That's the sort that is attracted to IPO crap.

futurebird,
@futurebird@sauropods.win avatar

Maybe my local knitting club should go public too.

where is the tech?
where is the innovation?
what is the sell beyond you have to go there to find out what the probably criminal ex-president is yelling about now? That's the ONLY source of traffic.

Without that, xyz math server would probably be bigger (and it's already cooler and more fun)

venite,
@venite@mastodon.nl avatar

@futurebird maybe it SHOULD go public. We could buy 51% of the shares and set some rules.

futurebird,
@futurebird@sauropods.win avatar

@venite

IDK how that could be done though since anyone can run a server.

jt_rebelo,
@jt_rebelo@ciberlandia.pt avatar

@futurebird I think coop-hosted Fediverse and coop-cloud should be available to more people. In my country there's a coop ISP and it's a shame most people aren't able to opt for it.
