The items for my brother's pitch drop experiment birthday present arrived, so now I need to make a stand for the funnel. This brass ring is a good place to start

I have a bell jar, more brass rod, and wood to make a base from, but where will I get a couple ounces of tar?...

I changed my mind. The glass funnel is going to sit inside of a brass funnel that I made out of a sheet of hobby brass

Making a mahogany base on the lathe

@MLE_online Emily, fwiw, pitch does have a bit of lower boiling components in it, I’d imagine if this piece is meant to last and function for decades, the mahogany might absorb some of the slightly more volatile components. I’d maybe put a metal disk on top of the mahogany on the inside if you really want to keep things flowing.

My two cents

@glasspusher none of the other experiments I've seen have a metal disk covering the wood. I don't think that's going to be an issue

These will support the funnel

The soldering is messier than I would've liked, but it's ok. I can live with it

Oiled. That has to cure now before I can go over the whole thing with steel wool to clean it up before it gets a coat of clear lacquer

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

Waiting for oil to cure is the worst

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

The base got its second coat of oil and a coat of clear lacquer. The brass funnel stand has been aged.

It's ready for pitch now!

Wow! What a nice sister you are! Nice work.

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@NeadReport Thanks! My brother is very hard to buy gifts for, and I've found the best thing is to give him something completely unexpected

NeadReport,
@NeadReport@vivaldi.net avatar

@MLE_online
Unexpected and handmade to boot. Did I miss what this mad scientist device is supposed to replicate?

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@NeadReport It's going to be a pitch drop experiment

f4grx,
@f4grx@chaos.social avatar

@MLE_online @NeadReport I didnt know you could find the required pitch!

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@f4grx @NeadReport There's not a lot of information about what kind of pitch is the right pitch or what viscosity the pitch should be. I am either going to see if i can nab some free tar from one of the natural seeps that pops up around the la brea tar pits, or just order pitch that's meant for telescope lens polishing

f4grx,
@f4grx@chaos.social avatar

@MLE_online @NeadReport woah natural tar! That would be the most interesting option! You have nice natural resources around your place, first natural clay, now natural tar!

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@f4grx @NeadReport I think you can find natural clay in almost any part of the world!

f4grx,
@f4grx@chaos.social avatar

@MLE_online @NeadReport yours was kinda from volcanoes iirc?

Come to think of it, Pitch Drop might be a good band name. Adding it to my list.
