Nobody seems to have noticed it but the Mastodon project have been granted funding by @NGIZero in the Entrust fund.
This is amazing, but the best part is that this funding is targeted at implementing… Quote Posts 🎉
This effort started several months ago and we already did some preliminary work, but this will be a big feature for our next 4.4 version. This funding will cover the ActivityPub work, as well as backend, web frontend and official mobile app implementation.
LB I still don't care for quote posts. I think it encourages toxic behaviours like boosting shit you'd be better off blocking, encouraging brigading/pile-ons, and clout chasing.
@annika most of these complaints are a result of Twitter culture, not a cause of them. After all, Tumblr is entirely designed around quote posts, and (for the most part) has a whole lot better of a culture than Twitter or Mastodon.social do.
@livelylion6@renchap@NGIZero Yeah we need some strong cultural values around how QPs are used in order to not fall foul to all the negativity they can bring.
@backhdlp iirc, there's still no FEP for those, Misskey's thing isn't a standard or anything, so maybe they wanna write a FEP first, then others can implement?
@thisismissem There's already work being done to get emoji reactions into Masto glitch-soc (compatible w/ *key's), although it's taking a long while. But some instances are already using them (like this one)
Oh, I'm just working on reposts in Smithereen. Just finished rewriting how Announce works. Support for quote posts was the next thing on my list. Will Mastodon use an existing standard (like Threads for example) or introduce its own?
@grishka We will probably try to support consuming existing formats, but the current implementations we are aware of all have issues. The first step of our work will be writing down a document about all of this, along with a FEP that we feel fixes those issues.
