Coming soon: YouTube cracking down all adblockers. Either allow Ads or Buy YouTube Premium. First, spotted here https://www.reddit.com/r/youtube/comments/14kmd07/youtube_cracking_down_on_if_youre_not_paying_them/ What do you think?

How is this saved? With cookies or do they block the IP afterwards? I hope they block the IP and by that YT from public Wifi etc would be quite funny ;-)

DominicusPurple,

@nixCraft the more they want us to watch their ads, the less we'll use their software. its a good time to flood youtube with peertube advertisements i think.

jagdtigger,

@nixCraft
They are in for a rude awakening, its going to be an endless whack-a-mole game with them always getting the short end of the stick in the long run.....
Whatever they cook up has to run client side and thus can be meddled with.
(Has anyone seen a working anti-adblock? Havent seen any for quite a while ago.)

@nixCraft

I think YT wants to join the gang (Twitter, Reddit, and others) in the Slippery Slope.
Soon it will hurt them in the long run. Content-Creators will upload videos to other free platforms while uploading for YT. It's the same video file you need to do more distribution. The biggest loser will be YT.
People are pissed at them. I was reading comments everywhere. They are going with rocket speed toward the same slope where "Uncle Elon" and "Uncle Steve" are.

loop22,

@nixCraft then how long before YouTube premium shows ads anyway

bulbyvr,

@nixCraft you know damn well ublock origin will persevere through this - uBlock Origin always eventually defuses anti adblockers

Dreit,

@nixCraft I think it's time to make new Youtube. With blackjack and hookers!
Or maybe let's skip whole Youtube thing...

parsa,
wekeys,

@parsa @nixCraft
1- use a PipedYoutube Instance if you need to just watch a video
2- If the video is kind of interesting, give the link to PeerTube for making a copy that can be viewed by anyone for free and without being spyied

@nixCraft let's all continue the move to the fediverse. I know of PeerTube but idk what it's like.

@nixCraft Everything now has $15 a month subs or ads every 5 minutes. Some stuff is just unwatchable with how many ads are crammed in there, not to mention creator’s own ads they put in their videos.

kontaidistro,

@nixCraft I wonder how this will affect people who use browsers that block ads and telemetry by default.
Not using the normal ad blocking extensions.

kura,

@nixCraft not buying youpoop. gonna switch to super8 or to peeptube

Alfika07,

@nixCraft Just use Ublock

@nixCraft just a game of cat and mouse isn’t it?

@nixCraft It'll be an arms race, as it ultimately is with everything like this.

Also, it might just blow up in their face.

@nixCraft This is probably a very unpopular opinion: I don't see much wrong with this. YouTube is expensive to operate and they need to make money somehow to stay afloat and pay their creators. If you're not willing to pay for YouTube Premium then ads are the only way to finance it. 🤷 I like having both a free, ad-supported option, and a way to pay directly to remove ads.

I use YouTube so much that I don't mind paying for premium.

@nixCraft Am I the only one who pays for YouTube Premium? I enjoy it and the fact that it comes with YouTube Music.

terpsichore,

@nixCraft I am almost exclusively consuming YouTube through invidious, but they seem to be going after invidious as well. I recently tried to watch something through YouTube directly because it wouldn't run on invidious and the amount of ads was unbearable. If there are no ad-free options any more, I will avoid YouTube as much as possible.

PacoBell,

@nixCraft I personally haven't seen it on mobile yet. Do they have a similar scarygram for that?

@nixCraft Yesterday freetube still worked for me, but if it's gonna fail at some point, I will not use youtube anymore. It's just I really dislike ads, because they throw me out of my vibes, especially true for me because I live in a surface level democracy, where our "great" leader has infinite money for the 2-bit demagogic ads, and they just instantly make me angry and just want to close youtube immediately.

scribe,

@nixCraft I think someone on tumblr figured out a way to bypass it already, at least for now

@nixCraft I think this might be the time I get PiHole :)

_RyekDarkener_,

@nixCraft At least they admit that it is not possible to provide the service without having the financial source to do it. So it comes to the question of a fair price for the service.
If the price is not worth it, other platforms will come.
Imho its also a society problem. Information should be available for all. Which means, that everyone should pay for it according his capabilities until a fair price for the whole thing is reached.

nixCraft,
@nixCraft@mastodon.social avatar

@_RyekDarkener_ they do charge fair price. For example, most of poor countries get cheaper subscription options like $1.99 vs $12 in USA

_RyekDarkener_,
@_RyekDarkener_@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft Understood. But even in US not everybody can afford $1.99 per month for that.

danielfgom,

@nixCraft On Android I have no choice, I watch the ads. But on Linux hopefully @Vivaldi browser will still keep blocking them ...🤞
