Today at work I listened to Taylor Swift while building a dashboard for the upcoming Eras Tour release on D+. This job is just pure fun sometimes.

Send me your favorite novelty accounts on here, I'm looking for a few things to spruce up my feed. I'm thinking like pictures of art, microfiction, links to interesting websites, stuff like that.

Are there any good word-of-the-day bots on here, for example?

Here's some that I get enjoyment out of, in no particular order:

@apilsetas @wf__games @gummyarts @wayback_exe @JanMatson @samim
@FunRandWeb @256 @monoscope @Horse_ebooks

Gur814,

@jake4480 You always have the best recommendations. Found a few new ones to follow in this list. Thanks!

Just when you thought #Slack couldn't get any worse, they go and cram in #AI https://www.theverge.com/2024/2/14/24070590/slack-ai-launch-thread-summaries-search-recap

Gur814,

@cory To play devil’s advocate a bit: This sounds pretty useful and is one of the few uses of AI that I don’t mind so much. It’s not trying to generate something “new”, but is making it easier to search and filter what’s already there. I work in a large enterprise and the unread section gets crazy. I wouldn’t mind a quick summary of some of these channels to help catch up on what I’ve missed. 🤷

Gur814,

@cory This movie was such a fun surprise. I remember seeing it in theaters having no idea what it was about which is the ideal way to experience it, imo.

📝: I don't want anything your AI generates https://coryd.dev/posts/2024/i-dont-want-anything-your-ai-generates/

Gur814,

@cory This hits the nail on the head. I hate this trend of trying to strip the humanity from every cool thing humans do.

Gur814, to random

This is absurd. How did we let it get like this?

Please clarify why Jira software is so unpopular among devs.

Gur814,

@nixCraft It’s slow, buggy, and the UI is convoluted.

I really need to check out Monarch: Legacy of Monsters- looks like they're on episode 8 already haha. And Godzilla x Kong in 100 days. Not bad.

Gur814,

@jake4480 It has its ups and downs but I’m mostly enjoying it so far. The most recent episode was excellent.

Gur814,

@jake4480 Monsters are limited. It’s more of a human drama. There are some human characters who are really fun (Kurt/Wyatt Russel) and others who are kind of grating. But there’s some decent intrigue, occasional cool monster stuff, and an entertaining enough narrative. Solid 6 or 7 outta 10 so far.

I’m so hyped for Godzilla x Kong. Have you seen Minus One yet?

Gur814,

@jake4480 Yes! It was amazing. Probably my favorite Godzilla movie ever. They actually made me care about the human characters.

My wife doesn’t usually care about Godzilla stuff either but I will probably rewatch it with her at home. This is one she’d probably enjoy. It’s a good movie that happens to feature Godzilla and not just a good Godzilla movie, if that makes sense.

Gur814,

@jake4480 Minus One prompted me to finally watch Shin too. 😄 I’ve been on a Godzilla kick lately.

Loved Shin. Lot’s of scenes of people sitting around talking though. Which I guess was part of the point of the political commentary it was making. But it made for a bit of a slower pace. Some of the craziest scenes in any Godzilla movie. The design is so iconic.

This is how many tokens (almost like words but not quite so) the users of @IceCubesApp have generated for automatic image descriptions. This feature is blowing up!

Gur814,

@dimillian @IceCubesApp This feature is so absurdly useful. I’m blown away by how good the descriptions are. One of my favorite uses of AI I’ve seen.

If you have a personal website: what platform, CMS, SSG, tech stack, or service are you using for it? Would you pick it again? How much technical expertise did it require to set up and make it your own? And do you have to do a lot of maintenance?

Once more – you guessed it – I’m asking for my subscribers. 😉
RT = 🎉

Gur814, (edited )

@matthiasott I’m using Ghost with a lightly customized base theme. It’s hosted on a $10 per month Digital Ocean droplet.

It’s a simple setup that requires very little maintenance and development work. I do enough coding in my day job, so my personal website needs to be mostly code and maintenance free to be enjoyable.

It required a bit of tech expertise to set up since I’m self hosting two at the same time and needed to configure nginx and Let’s Encrypt manually.

Added a dedicated Taylor Swift emoji

Gur814,

@cory What a fun idea!

Unsolicited nitpick: If there’s no genre but an artist that you have an emoji for, it’ll return the default emoji instead of the artist emoji. You can move the check for no genre below the artist checks.

Super glad I surprised wifey by ordering the new Mario game (she always loves them) and it arrives today! Wild. It looks pretty good. I play a tiny bit of Mario here and there but it's not really always my thing. She's GOOD at them, though (she's good at ALL games, so much better at them than I am! 🤣)

Gur814,

@jake4480 If you end up playing co-op with her, let me know how it is, please. My wife and I are looking for a new couch co-op game for Switch.

Gur814,

Hey folks; I have never driven in the states in my EV and am rather skittish. Is it true that Electrify America chargers take normal credit cards for payments and we aren't obliged to have a bespoke account to use them?

Gur814,

@genesisoflegend Yes. Every Electrify America station I’ve been to had credit card readers.

Your mileage may vary on the reliability though. Some are broken. Some work when the app doesn’t. It’s a mixed bag of garbage.

Other social media stuff sure is exhausting when I see little blips of it from wherever. Whatever "verified" "person" going on about this or that, the back and forth, the constant armchair political squabbles, it's insanity and I want no part of it.

There's just so much nonsense everywhere else, and it's so nice here.

Gur814,

@jake4480 Agreed. This site is a nice escape from all that other nonsense.
