Agree with this piece on IG’s Threads and why it can never truly replicate the magic Twitter once had https://techcrunch.com/2023/07/06/threads-wont-be-fun-but-it-will-give-brands-a-home-away-from-twitter/?guccounter=1

@taylorlorenz @cspam this perfectly summarizes why I always felt weird on Instagram. It always felt like a hustle.

@taylorlorenz @klefstadmyr A very poignant analysis of IG as well...

medicine,

@taylorlorenz Threads will always be an extension of Insta and FB...so I cant do my anonymous hoodrat bullshit that I was blissfully allowed on Twitter and here on Mastodon 😞 alas, old Twitter will never find a true replacement. Here is really as close as it gets

natriumchloride,

@taylorlorenz hmm does this imply that maintaining a presence on threads could be beneficial for small business?

Zack101,

@taylorlorenz how can you fairly compare an age old product to a brand new one just in its infancy stages?

@taylorlorenz You cannot replicate the magic of Twitter unless you have a Time Machine. The next magical thing must be a new use of current tech or a new technology.

Jsp343,

@taylorlorenz with the end of 3rd party apps on reddit Instagram is the ONLY one that's fun

What is fun to you?

@taylorlorenz Threads is where people will go to yell at companies, and influencers will yell back. Plus lots of heavily-boosted dog pictures because some ML pipeline at Meta said it would make the place seem more human.

This is not entirely a bad thing, BTW. Twitter still dies, and all that crap is kept off other social networks.

@taylorlorenz Threads is not Twitter for a huge host of reasons and given the direction already set, probably can never be. There may never be a true Twitter replacement, but I think Mastodon and the Fediverse can come closest.

JoeOriginal,

@taylorlorenz I have a hunch that Threads may be able to cannibalize the Twitter user base enough to destroy it. But if any company could be called evil, it would be Meta.

rlmcneary2,

@taylorlorenz "To be clear: Threads isn’t going to be fun. This is Meta we’re talking about — fun isn’t the point at all. Instagram isn’t fun either, but it does function well as a personal landing page for anybody trying to sell something or build a brand. The rest of us just shuffle around in there a lot for lack of anything else to do, which seems to work well for Meta."

Maybe Threads is trying to jump right to the final stage. https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/21/potemkin-ai/#hey-guys

@taylorlorenz ngl tho we need more shitposter Taylor here.

terrawellington,

@taylorlorenz Twitter was and is valuable for all the reasons cited in the article — it’s so unfortunate

@taylorlorenz everything lacks whimsy these days and I hate it. It’s all optimized for fucking ads and I hate that too.

archstreet,

@taylorlorenz I can’t see Threads being great for tech policy ideas & serious discussion when the algo keeps pushing Paris Hilton and Tom Brady

blueyzachary,

@taylorlorenz I wish Twitter would reenable SMS capabilities :(

@taylorlorenz haven't noticed changes in my twitter experience that aren't primarily about:

  1. Seeing more stuff that I didn't used to - IF I view "for you" - but which I can easily avoid/mute as desired.

  2. People I enjoyed have left twitter, creating the erosion they lamented when exiting. Protesting "new twitter" by leaving has at least in part contributed to the creation of new twitter.

But I'm not struggling to make twitter give me the perspectives/pleasure that I'm looking for.

fejes,

@taylorlorenz I like this: "Threads’ pedigree all but ensures a total bifurcation between the kind of content that brands, celebrities, organizations and governments make and the unhinged terminally online posts that Twitter was once known for."

stringtheery,

@taylorlorenz I'm hopeful that when Threads supports ActivityPub, we Mastodon users can stay on this nice platform, while seeing all the updates from Teams (from only people we follow).

lancehomer,

@taylorlorenz I would still prefer that Mastodon be the new gathering place. While it isn’t perfect, I do appreciate that it isn’t corporate owned.

@taylorlorenz So true, and it’s difficult not to be wary of anything run by Meta, who has an absolutely awful track record with journalists, media, privacy, surveillance capitalism, etc.

I think that if they follow through on making it possible to interact with / from Mastodon, I will appreciate that it offers your average person an easier path. I’ll happily follow folks on Threads from here. There’s no chance I sign up for Threads, though ;)

(Happy to see you posting here!)

olavf,

@jonathan @taylorlorenz my thoughts too, but I'm also up to here with Meta shenanigans, particularly their random modding.

@taylorlorenz not sure twitter had "magic" haha

aeroblazt,

@taylorlorenz For a long time now I've felt social media to be a lot less social than before, and this explains it. It became a lot less about your social circle and a lot more about celebrities and content pages.
