@atomicpoet the fact that its like we will allow them but you can hide them is awful! I do wonder what moderation tools will be available for the first FOSS implantations of AT Protocol.
@atomicpoet I'm sorry because I feel like you took my comment on Fediverse users considering getting an invite for Bluesky as direct criticism. It wasn't. Thank you for reporting about this, we need it to keep the Fediverse relevant as a serious concurrent.
@atomicpoet
Not saying you're wrong, but does anyone ever list themselves as a political hate group when they sign up? They think they are patriots. Not sure how that button would ever work.
@atomicpoet Some things that I haven't seen explained with any real clarity is, how does the "political hate group" tag get attached? Who does the tagging? If you disagree with a tag applied to you, can you appeal? What happens when Nazis & BLM both claim that the other are the 'real' political hate groups?
etc.
It's a shame, because like you, I do see that BlueSKy has potential, but it seems they too are determined to speed run the content moderation learning curve
@atomicpoet in my opinion that shouldn’t even be an option, I get the ‘freedom of choice’ angle and all but.. come on, some things should transcend personal preferences.
also, by not filtering that stuff out by default they’re essentially admitting that they don’t care about their service being used to spread hate, and I don’t think that’s very good optics..
@atomicpoet the question I would ask is what is the mechanism on Blue Sky for a poster on Blue Sky to be associated with a Political Hate Group?
Do they simply self-declare "I'm a Nazi"?
Surely the normal route would be for you to be able to report them and, based on their post for moderators to decide that the poster belonged in one of those groups and should be categorised as such.
@atomicpoet interesting thread here about why it's so bad. Top line is that the bluesky team learned nothing from Twitter and are making the same mistakes, even though there's collective experience this time around
@atomicpoet And apparently you can only mute the thread, not the whole racist? So every time this racist asshole starts a new racist thread of assholery, you'd have to mute it separately?
@atomicpoet if everyone just stopped talking about Bluesky, it would simply turn back into a supermarket in the public consciousness. Your efforts only gives them relevance.
@quirk LOL. Pretending that Bluesky doesn’t exist won’t prevent it from existing. I talk about Bluesky because I talk about everything that’s supposed to be decentralized. Even stuff that fails in this purpose.
@atomicpoet If I'm reading this right it says "mute thread." Not mute the individual. Is there a separate menu with user level settings? Are the 'impersonation' and 'hate group' tags part of the reporting mechanism? This menu is very odd to me.
