Stop using Chrome as your daily driver.

Google proposed adding DRM to Chrome, which will be used to stop ad blockers, privacy tools, password plugins, accessibility/reader modes.

The only way to stop Google’s Chrome from wrecking the internet like Internet Explorer did for many year to switch to a NOT chromium-based browser as soon as possible for your day to day. You’ve got Safari, and Firefox as your choices.

I know you’ll have to use Chrome sometimes because it’s already happening.

@af I'm pretty sure some Chromium-based browsers will also refuse to implement it - e.g. Brave has a very long list of things it disables or removes from the Chromium code in their builds

@af also don't get your eye scanned for world coins..

@af lynx ftw

michman92,

@af I don't understand any of the above. However, I DO understand that Chrome is junk (IMO.) I am a hardcore Firefox user, and have been since 2006.

@michman92 @af well. Google is basically drm the whole web.

Digital rights management (DRM) is the use of technology to control and manage access to copyrighted material.

@af Firefox gangggg

kay_kidoutai,

@af my work forces me to use chrome because we pay for Micro$ofts fucking terrible business suite and it does't work in anything except Edge and Chrome. My level of rage is incomprehensible.

Uraael,

@kay_kidoutai @af It works in Vivaldi and you should be able to install that even without Admim access.

piskvor,

@Uraael @af @kay_kidoutai ... which is yet another reskin of Chromium. Possibly the reason it also works.

Uraael,

@piskvor @af @kay_kidoutai Well, "reskin" is a bit harsh when you consider it offers a completely different and user-centric experience, as well as the company's devotion to removing and disabling bits of chromium they disagree with, hence my suggestion.

But in principle you're not wrong.

@af I moved to Firefox just in time! Unfortunately have to use SSI for work sadly

dmanls,

@af What about Vivaldi?

konstantin,

@af Safari user here. It’s perfect for everything from webdev to browsing and actually faster than the alternatives. And yes, Chrome has been deprecated and removed from the Good place.

maikel,

@af I use Firefox

I never have to use Chrome at all.

I don't get your final sentence.

af,
@af@dataare.cool avatar

@maikel some websites you might have to use will only work on Blink/Chromium/Chrome, because we can’t stop what has already started.

resuna,
@resuna@ohai.social avatar

@af @maikel Both Lenovo's and HP's websites won't let you log in and manage your warranties and stuff on a gecko-based browser.

zygous,
@zygous@mastodon.green avatar

@resuna @af @maikel Also, despite Firefox supporting FIDO2, some websites don’t let you register security keys using Firefox.

nthcdr,
@nthcdr@emacs.ch avatar

@resuna @af @maikel so no hp or lenovo laptops for me then...

resuna,
@resuna@ohai.social avatar

@nthcdr @af @maikel That's just two examples I came up with. It's becoming really quite common for sites at companies with some huge generational corporate application engine as the backend.
