@glynmoody Doubly concerning is the subtext: that once the target is met we’ll have done enough and don’t need to bother trying to reduce further.

I worked at Mozilla for almost 5 years in my little niche of writing Python-based tests for web services until my grumpy tendencies got me pushed out in layoffs. It was fine, good severance and a good overall experience until my last year. But y’all are super ignorant about the company and what it takes to build a web browser.

zygous,
@zygous@mastodon.green avatar

@grmpyprogrammer I use Safari on iOS and Firefox on my Macs. I have Firefox installed on my mobiles for the Send to Device feature, which isn’t as seamless as Continuity, but works fine from Safari’s share menu. Mac to mobile I tend not to need.

I came to Firefox from Netscape Navigator, but TBH these days I’m mostly clinging to the idea that a browser monoculture is bad.

My server wasn’t supposed to send any mails directly for a while already, only via web hoster’s relay. Yet I’d still occasionally see such direct mails in DMARC reports. I’ve been suspecting some misconfigured service that would go around my mail configuration.

Now I finally found the culprit. No, it wasn’t an issue with some service. It was actually me forgetting to adjust one scenario in the OpenSMTPD configuration. So in the rare case that the server would do SRS, mail would still be delivered directly. Past Wladimir must’ve been rather distracted. 🙄

zygous,
@zygous@mastodon.green avatar

@WPalant I’m toying with the idea of running a mail server. I imagine there’s a reasonable amount of initial setup, but what’s the ongoing maintenance look like? Is it worth it?

    Feels good to update an article from early 2021 to say that the problem described back then is nowadays solved by a single CSS pseudo selector.

    Selector in case: :user-invalid. It represents any validated form element whose value isn’t valid based on their validation constraints, after the user has interacted with it.

    Supported by Firefox 88 and Safari 16.5 before, and now also by Chrome 119 (current Chrome Dev, to hit stable in October)

    https://brm.us/diy-user-invalid#v5

    Recording of a form being filled. The form shows an error message about the e-mail address format, even though the user is still entering text. This is solved by

    @bramus Awesome! It’s painful doing this in JS, especially with the nagging feeling that it ought to be so unnecessary.

    So, that is bad is a no-brainer, but it looks like MS Teams will not work completely (video calls + audio) in . And I don't mean it in the "change UA settings" way, I guess Microsoft just uses something specific to Chrome's engine on it, I think.

    So if you depend on this shitty app for work but don't wanna use Chrome (or the desktop client), what do you do? Honest .

    zygous,

    Tip: Instead of saying "Stop using Chrome" or "Use Chrome instead of Firefox", try saying "I have written, and the Firefox project has accepted, a patch that adds a 'profiles' feature equal in ease-of-use to that of Chrome". That probably would be a lot more convincing

    zygous,
    @zygous@mastodon.green avatar

    @mcc @Gargron Yeah, it’s tab based, but opening a new tab does so using the container of the tab you’re on. So having two windows each with their own containers could Just Work. There are keyboard shortcuts for new tabs in specific containers too, e.g. Cmd-Shift-1 for Personal (customisable). Also, you can specify given domains to always open in a given container.

    I’ve found it to be a great feature without needing to install any add-ons.

    Stop using Chrome as your daily driver.

    Google proposed adding DRM to Chrome, which will be used to stop ad blockers, privacy tools, password plugins, accessibility/reader modes.

    The only way to stop Google’s Chrome from wrecking the internet like Internet Explorer did for many year to switch to a NOT chromium-based browser as soon as possible for your day to day. You’ve got Safari, and Firefox as your choices.

    I know you’ll have to use Chrome sometimes because it’s already happening.

    @darth Wow, that’s a cynical and pessimistic take. There seemed to be no argument in it though, just defeat.

    Mozilla’s press release was more upbeat (although, of course, it crowed about Mozilla being on the committee): https://blog.mozilla.org/en/mozilla/messaging-layer-security-is-now-an-internet-standard/

    zygous,

    @dgoosens @Mer__edith @signalapp It’s a shame how she didn’t really talk much about how on-device scanning still breaks encryption. Damian insisted companies wouldn’t be asked to do that, but that’s because of this plan to scan before the message is encrypted, which is still breaking the encrypted pipeline.

    zygous,
    @zygous@mastodon.green avatar

    @dgoosens @Mer__edith @signalapp In my mind the client-side scanning implementation was still a back door, but I guess that’s a matter of perspective. I dug a bit more and found that client-side scanning still would require manual review (makes sense), and that requires a back door.
