theparson,

Sci-fi nerds are obsessed with the possibility of terraforming Mars in the future. Why? Have you seen projections of such a Martian landscape? The geopolitics of such a world would be horrendous.

inkican,

@theparson I literally wrote that short story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKfo9IZZY20&t=0s

Early in Kim Stanley Robinson's Red Mars, a traveling colonist is reflecting on the psychological screening procedures used to narrow down and select the final group of colonists, and comes to the realization that the system used, instead of selecting the most psychologically healthy applicants, actually selected the highest functioning sociopaths capable of gaming that system.

theparson,

@DavidMHarlan to what end?

...Well, it wasn't utopia, I can tell you that 😆

It's sort of a "wait a minute" moment that she has when they're already like 4 months out on the journey from Earth to Mars, and a little bit too late to be coming to that realization. Marvelous foreshadowing.
