After leaving Kbin (for unrelated reasons), where those spaces are blocked by default, I started to wonder if I should leave Lemmy, then realized it was not all that way but only certain spaces, easily blocked ever since 0.19.3. (Reddit had become virtually all that way, so it was making sense to me to think that social media was just becoming that way in general.)
However, saying the names of those spaces out loud is likely to trigger removal by a mod.
This is a real problem for wanting the Fediverse to grow in the future, as unsuspecting new people see that and - the sane ones anyway - don’t want any part of it. Every one of us, unless we were warned, learned the hard way about “those places”. By ignoring the issues, e.g. by leaving it up to each individual user to block those instances, we allow this situation to perpetuate. I for one think it would be far friendlier to block any instance where there is a >75% chance that a new user would be not merely downvoted but outright insulted and make such communities opt-in rather than the current situation of needing to first detect which ones are that way and then opt-out of each one individually.
Pelo que eu pesquisei aqui o lemmy não tem essa funcionalidade ainda, parece que da pra fazer isso pelo kbin (é tipo um outro lemmy do fediverso, nunca testei.)
New here. Migrated from Reddit. Still trying to figure out Lemmy - what’s everyone’s experiences like coming from Reddit and does Lemmy serve as a good alternative? Pros and cons/differences?...
I had a 3-month ban from a community once and had no idea until I did a mod log search on my own username about 6 months later.
Thinking back to how I could possibly have failed to even notice, I think it's just that kbin still displays the comments of banned kbin users so I was probably still getting interactions through that.
They are. It’s not shown on Lemmy itself, but anyone who federates with another instance gets to know who voted on what, and sometimes that information is made public to their entire instance (this is the case with kbin).
Ooh thanks for the step by step. I was able to identify the one kbin user who downvoted me over the past 24 hours. 😜
Yeah, given this I won’t recommend that kbin users downvote just anything since the platform doesn’t protect their privacy. Lemmy users should be good tho. Thanks! 😊
There are a lot of tanky posts coming from lemmy.ml. Their whole purpose seems to be to troll and spread their bullshit far and wide. They are nearly as bad as the alt-right. They argue in bad faith and celebrate authoritarian oppression. The beehaw mods might want to consider defederating.
I started on kbin.world and really liked it, there are several features I much prefer on Kbin vs Lemmy like being able to see the activity log for comments and posts. Unfortunately I wouldn’t recommend new users start there anymore. Ernest is awesome but it seems like he’s got some stuff going on IRL and he doesn’t seem to want to share development responsibilities. He was accepting some more help and putting together a small team so maybe it’s gotten better since I switched to lemm.ee but especially back around December and January there were periods where he was absent for extended periods and issues weren’t getting fixed until they had some time to snowball into big issues and he was stuck spending more time on playing catchup from that than working on improvements. I didn’t try Mbin but it seems like that might be the better choice for the time being if someone wanted to start using that part of the fediverse.
Would you be interested in trying to grow any of these? None of the moderators seem to be active.
I might prefer to avoid ml for political reasons, though. Are you able to get the kbin posts to federate to your instance? I subscribed to it, but don’t see any posts on my instance yet.
Another option would be to create a new community, perhaps with a more general name like c/autonomousvehicles or c/autos. Thoughts?
So have been testing over the past few weeks and made accounts on: a) Hubzilla b) Friendica c) Mastodon d) Kbin e) Lemmy f) Iceshrimp g) Bonfire h) Peertube i) Funkwhale j) Pixelfed
I’m only interested in moving my friends away from Facebook, and have the same fun we used to have as a group, for now nothing seem to match FB functionality unfortunately…
Have your own profile
Public and Private Groups
1 to 1 chats
And of course no one would consider joining a platform without a ( feature complete ) mobile app, Firefish is amazing but it has no mobile clients that look as a good as the website, and people say Friendica is the ethical Facebook, but it’s ugly…😅 i don’t know what to recommend ?
Ah, that makes more sense if it was meant for small44. The only reason I thought your numbers were out was because I thought you were talking to me about my communities.
Geez, that’s… not good
It's not ideal, and kbin did fork. In my opinion it was not the dev's fault, it wasn't even really a beta when he suddenly got swamped with reddit refugees. But I believe in his vision.
Oh shoot, I meant the above for @small44 actually, i.e. OP. I don’t believe you had replied to me at any point, hence that wasn’t meant for you.
That said-- I’m not too sure the “90:9:1” rule applies so well to the FV. For one thing, it seems like a good number of subscribers tried out Lemmy (etc) at some point and then went back to Reddit (etc), meaning they’re no longer really here. Another point is that since the FV moves a lot more slowly than Reddit, I question whether FV users are as active here compared to other places.
About the bias of me seeing only part of Small44’s community numbers due to filtering by my own instance-- you’re right of course, but after double-checking their overall global numbers, they’re actually only a tiny bit larger. Ironically or not, most of their users came from my own instance (lemm.ee). So their numbers across three communities are really too small to ever be properly viable IME.
So something like the kbin worldnews community I mod has literally thousands of inactive subscribers.
There are two mods currently, Ernest, admin of kbin as well as owner of /m/tech, and @artillect, who hasn't been seen (except for votes maybe?) for 8 months.
The word is that Ernest has real-life problems and can't maintain kbin at the moment.
I've applied here and a bunch of other places but hopefully better-qualified, more active people have also applied; Even if I get it, I can't be here all the time.
... but it needs the owner of the magazine, Ernest, who isn't around, to accept the applications.
The guy that manages Kbin has been having personal issues and stepped away from the fediverse so yeah Kbin is kind of in limbo at the moment and indeed not well moderated. There’s mods but there’s just so much they can do. The software doesn’t federate the deletions so even if they’re gone on Kbin, they remain everywhere else.
Ugh that will probably never leave you. I haven't seen CSAM since I stumbled on it in the 1990s but what I saw is still burnt into my brain. What has been seen cannot be unseen.
This is one of the reasons I stay on kbin, it doesn't autoload images.

Im on kbin and it does not show a total but I block anything in languages I don't know or that seems to be all memes or sports related but certainly not anime or porn.

"Magazine" is the general name for communities or subgroups on kbin. Whether you meant to or not, your post is in /m/kbinMeta which is for posts about kbin itself.
Character assassinations aren't relevant here. You'll probably find more like-minds in a politics sub... and a few who'll tear posts like this apart even when it is in the right place.

I don't really know. I don't really make it a point to look at what the origin point of the posts are. Even when I look at the name for whatever reason I don't think in terms of this is a lemmy experience or this is a kbin. I am straight outa kbin though.
