German environmental activists are facing increasingly harsh rhetoric and legal action from authorities as they mobilize to confront the climate crisis....
Welcome to the German gerontocracy. The obsolute majority gives a fuck about anything other than living their remaining years as well as possible, conservative politicians have completely abondoned actual topics, positions and discussions for the most rediculous culture war bullshit imaginable and the media is parroting their narratives 24/7.
Any actual progress is drowned in propaganda to reverse its effect (for example the law change to reduce co2 in the heating sector managed -after months of lies and desinformation- to create a massive boom in gas-heating instead).
And just yesterday the CDU in opposition (and biggest party by polls) demanded to revert the EU's ban on combustion engines (that doesn't exist in the first place but is just a conclusion following co2 reduction goals) and other climate goals (including those implmentd by them years ago) because we can't strain German people and the economy with "EV madness"...
The opposition party don’t have any power to implement policy all they can do is try and direct things in a slightly different manner but the conservatives are not interested in listening so there’s not a lot that labour can do.
Frankly you seem like you’ve decided that you don’t like the labour party and are now flailing around trying to look for reasons. At some point you’ve probably said “they’re all the same” or “they’re Tory Lite”, probably because someone said it down the pub once, and now you’re going to parrot it, ad infinitum.
Let’s just focus on this policy announcement shall we? The conservatives are threatening to introduce national service, meanwhile Labour are not threatening to do that, they are saying they will lower the voting age 16. How are they not opposing the Conservatives?
The people who say that sort of thing heard someone else say it once and just parrot it. When you try and delve deeper into their political philosophy you realize that there’s nothing under the surface.
My Brother-In-Law is like this, What he knows about the political situation of this country wouldn’t fill the back of a postage stamp. Yet he’s perfectly comfortable telling me how all political parties are the same.
I’m shocked more people aren’t already better prepared for this, but it’s actually the same thing we should be doing now, and continue to do if Biden actually wins:
Organize locally. Get hyperlocal. Organize your city, neighbors, block, building, workplace, and friend group. Establish mutual aid networks, take back city councils, county boards, and school boards from the stewards of landlords and big employers.
Establish protection for those who need it, and plant the crop of future national leaders who will do the long overdue work of putting government to work for the masses. Make it harder for any president or governor to exercise state violence by getting our people in prosecutors offices and judgeships.
The Democrats are not going to save us. Biden is just planning to go down with the ship. Absolutely vote for the lesser of two evils if you live somewhere where your vote matters, but recognize that the Democratic party is not an ally to the antifascist movement, because combating fascism conflicts with the interests of capital.
That can change, but until it does, don’t put faith in them. Anything positive they do will be because power-players were replaced. And that starts in your own neighborhood.
Edit: Since this has been well received, I want to say a quick word on third parties: don’t be afraid of them.
Without getting into a lot of details, there are a lot of myths about the risks that third parties present, but before we parrot all of that, we should just acknowledge that there is no harm in listening to their platforms. It doesn’t make you a kook to hear ideas that often get suppressed by the mainstream, or to use third parties as a way to network and meet people. I think Jill Stein has a lot of useful things to say, and if a pollster asks me, I will gladly try to bump her numbers up so that she is harder to ignore. Don’t be afraid to do that.
The thing that doesn’t make sense is protesting Biden’s support for Israel by voting for Trump
You are just conflating two things with that.
But even people not voting leaves the Democrats with a problem
They sure do. But its not the voters job to fix that. And brow-beating people into ‘any blue will do’, when that very approach to strategic voting is demonstrated to not be working (see Joe Bidens poll numbers; any of the detailed polling on formerly/ likely Biden voters) is antithetical towards your goals, if defeating Trump is your goal. So you have to make a decision if stopping Trump or electing Biden is your goal. Its been evident since December it seems you’ll have to choose between the two.
Joe Biden isn’t a viable candidate at this point. He hasn’t been since December; its just that liberals are only coming around to realizing it now. The reason he hasn’t moved on Gaza is that he didn’t think he needed to. Any blue will do was, as you parroted, is the mantra democrats and liberals have been trained to speak. The problem is that’s not going to do this election cycle, and by continuing with that rhetorical strategy, its actually making the situation worse. Every day that goes by, the situation gets worse and worse for Biden.
Like, you are in a race to get to town. You have the choice between a non-working car (Biden) and a bicycle. The bike is slower, and you may be less likely to win on it (but you might have a chance if you can beat some lights and take some short cuts). The car isn’t running any more. It was running, but its driver drove it into the ditch by refusing to make a turn while there was still time.
Its not themselves democrats have to convince in this election, its everyone else that keeps getting ignored by the democratic party. But once again, they’re convinced that people are just ‘obligated’ to voting for them, but that has been demonstrated to be a failed electoral strategy (Clinton, 2016). Americans have shown that as voters they will not just toe the line. And brow-beating/ shaming has the opposite effect. The democrats in particular take an incessantly pejorative approach to their rhetoric. In the US, today, you have to go get voters. They aren’t going to just ‘come’ to you. Which means you need to change your position if you want to do get elected. If Biden can’t or won’t do that, he’s a broken down car. You’re better off hopping on your bike and getting peddling.
Third party candidates don’t typically siphon votes away from the party that religiously tows the line.
Trump doesn’t really tow the line, through. He’s a manifestation of a revolt from inside the GOP’s white nationalist electoral core, against the financial internationalist who have controlled the party since Reagan.
I don’t think it’s clear who RFK is really feeding from. It’s possible his voters simply wouldn’t turn out if he wasn’t on the ballot. But it’s doubtful that he can steal Biden voters by parroting Trump positions.
The dems and the left will debate procedural shit for how to accomplish similar goals. The right is all emotional appeals/reactionaries.
Liberal admins don’t debate procedural shit, they kill legislation hostile to their donors with technicalities. These same technicalities never affect our illegal wars or unconstitutional policing or criminally unconscionable polluting or corrupt corporate bailouts.
The big difference between libs and cons is that cons demand their red meat and are willing to lose an election or two to guarantee it, while liberals are constantly running scared of their replacements in the next election.
The emotion you see isn’t unique to conservatives. It’s simply rewarded rather than shamed.

So are you a pragmatist or not? You’re willing to compromise on Democratic support for genocide out of what you see as practical reality, why then are you doing the most impractical thing of trying to convince millions of voters to be pro-genocide instead of working to convince one single politician to do the right thing?
Have you not been paying attention to public support for Israel in the US for the past forty fucking years?
Let’s go down through the facts, shall we?
A plurality of Dem voters still believe in CONTINUING TO SUPPLY ISRAEL WITH AID, ie exactly what Biden is doing, or INCREASING aid to Israel. They’re already pro-genocide by that standard.
The braindead talking points parroted by these ghouls necessarily imply that NOT voting Biden will, in some way, alleviate genocide, when the exact opposite is the fucking truth.
I already support protests and boycotts to influence Dem politicians, I just don’t support electing a literal fascist who has pledged to do everything he can to assist the ongoing genocide AND start a few here at home too, because I’m not a fucking moron.
No wonder Dems gave been getting dragged further and further to the right. With big brain strategy like this how could it not be inevitable that the party become more and more right-wing.
Please, tell me how the Dems are more right-wing now than in the 90s or 2000s. I’ll wait.
Sorry that the miserable task of democracy doesn’t appeal to you. Maybe you can find somewhere where you can just parrot the Party Line and be happy with the Great Leader? I hear the PRC is nice.
The number of examples I have seen of people being told to shut up about their lived experiences with sexual abuse in the past 24 hours on this platform is deeply disturbing....
So discrimination is okay if it hits the right people?
Again, an entire group is set out to be predators for no fault of their own.
I’m portrayed as a predator, because some idiots are, and I’m supposed to view that to reflect myself, because some other people are also treated badly? That doesn’t make sense. This is purely parroting the party line, chastising oneself what an evil counterrevolutionary one is.
No positive, but tons of new hostility. Awesome. That’ll take humanity in the right direction!
It’s a bad life in China as a journalist unless you parrot the Chinese communist party’s propaganda. “China is the world’s largest jailer of journalists, with more than 100 currently detained," as the organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF) announced last week when they released 2024 World Press Freedom Index.
China ranked 172nd among 180 countries and regions. Compared with Chiba’s 2023 ranking of 179th—second last place—China’s ranking has increased only because of the deterioration of situations in other countries, such as in the Taliban controlled Afghanistan, rather than any improvement in China.
RSF’s report also said that “in addition to detaining more journalists than any other country in the world,” the Chinese communist regime “continues to exercise strict control over information channels, implementing censorship and surveillance policies to regulate online content and restrict the spread of information deemed to be sensitive or contrary to the party line.”
In just four months, they have lost Toys for Bob (developer of Spyro Reignited and Crash 4), Arkane Austin (Prey 2017), and Tango (Evil Within, Hi-Fi Rush). I wish I had the money to casually buy some great dev studios, including the makers of a GOTY contender, and casually kill them off a few years later.
I know they are in panic mode right now, but I honestly don’t know what their plan is at this point. I doubt even they know. Watching the situation from the outside, it’s almost comical how MS has mismanaged everything for years. I live in Europe and I’ve never seen Xbox marketed anywhere. GamePass is supposedly their priority, and barely anyone I know who is interested in gaming knows that it even exists. The whole deal with the service was delivering first party games day one, yet failed to deliver anything worth buying four years into the new generation, while most of what they actually released was already in the works prior the acquisition. They bought dozens of studios, and mismanaged every single one of them. Fuck, they couldn’t even settle on the cover for their game cases for half a year after their new box released.
The only good thing out of this debacle is that people have finally realized how utterly incompetent Phil Spencer is. I remember the days when fanboys were parroting his lies and kept talking about how “Phil is a gamer just like us”, just because he showed on the stage in a shitty t-shirt. Too bad it took xbox fucking dying for them to realize, but I guess it’s better later than never.
Dear #KOIN
It is the Democratic party, not the Democrat party. It was created with that name, Democratic. Saying "Democrat party" is a slur the Democratic party did not invent - it is a Republican slur designed to emphasize "rat." Kindly stop parroting Republican potty mouths, thanks.
All valid points made in an academic setting. I think the general consensus, and the points other users are trying to make, involve more transparency and proper presenting of the facts in their statements. I have parroted the “oh you should try proton, they’re more private and secure” to other people. This is a factual but misleading statement without the nuance of higher OPSEC fundamentals.
Just look at their main landing page for proton mail.
Proton Mail’s end-to-end encryption and zero-access encryption ensure only you can see your emails. Not even Proton can view the content of your emails and attachments.
Proton Mail protects you from these digital spies and prevents companies from monitoring you.
your data is protected by some of the world’s strictest privacy laws.
From newsrooms, activists, and international organizations to academics, Nobel Prize winners, and movie characters, Proton Mail is the trusted choice for secure and private communication. Join over 100 million people worldwide who believe their online privacy is worth protecting.
A common user will look at this and believe that by just having this account, they will be protected. There is no asterisk* beside e-mail recovery explaining the dangers of linking to another e-mail. In fact, a lot of their services promote linking e-mail because you can’t use third party verification if you haven’t setup your recovery e-mail and/or cell phone verification. I ran into this trying to help an older relative who’s paranoid about online accounts, ended up being more hoops and they were dissuaded because it always come down to “enter more information to continue…privately ;)”
The front landing page should have a section explaining everything that’s being said here with vpn’s, alternative e-mails, and how to really protect yourself with anonymity. To a lot of people, Private+Secure=Anonymous. It’s not accurate, but unless you already know the things you have to do to protect your identity, it’s not very clear on what the average person should do.
I say this as a member of a leftwing party in my own country which could use a little more thinking and building politics up from principles and a lot less blind parroting of what the tribe’s chiefs say.
(We also have a Communist Party around here and those are even worse).
There is quite a large overlap between leftwing and the highly educated (maybe even intellectuals) so leftwingers are thinkers rather than flag waving parrots much more often than rightwingers. However, humans being humans, even many of those can get a strong emotional bond with a party, by which point they become unchallenging and unskeptical tribalists.
