Oh, Arc for Windows just came out. Testing that now.

Initial impression, this is meant for people who don't have 16 virtual desktops 😀

I have 16 virtual desktops and the features Arc provides are not useful for me. Sidebar for tabs, ability to make split views (I can already snap windows side by side), archiving tabs.

Tech question:

I've been trying out Browser and Mac and Windows and quite like it. I installed the iOS app today, but can't find where to create a new profile (as opposed to a new space).

Does this exist on Arc Mobile?

The Browser Company, makers of the Arc web browser, released its Windows version today. The company started testing the Windows client in December, and it said that more than 150,000 people have been using it.

@iammannyj Have you tried it and if you have what's your initial thought? I've read about it on countless forum posts but didn't get around to using the browser.

@pheonix - not yet, although I want to. I am a Windows 10 holdout, and general Linux user. There is a workaround, to get it to work, so I will "attempt" to install it later on my backup device. Otherwise, I may just try it out on another Windows 11 PC, or virtualize it. General release is "supposed" to be later on.

Didn’t think I would, but I’m kind of enjoying at work lately. 🤔 It does a lot of cool stuff I like (like auto PiP for videos).

Now if it would consume a little less energy and add support I might actually have a reason to uninstall Chrome for the first time in years. 🤔

But I doubt that’ll happen. 🤣 They seem too keen on integrating webapps within their main app UI.

I strongly recommend episode 179 of the @ruminate podcast. Such an excellent commentary and explainer about "AI", scraping and generally the state of things regarding original content. Definitely worth a listen (starts at around 14:45).

I've installed the #Arc #Browser for #Windows and immediately have some mixed feelings. I'm very conservative on tabs and the tab-sidebar feels like a massive waste of space... Despite that, and the disappointment of Chromium engine, it looks and works quite ok... :bulbasaurroll:

gurupanguji,

@ssamulczyk yeah wish there were more engines. I’m with you on that. For a brief moment, I wondered if Arc would be that company given they were interested in performance and rendering. But they seem to have focused on the AI-ness of everything. Bummer really.

ssamulczyk,
@ssamulczyk@mstdn.social avatar

@gurupanguji I consider AI a useless schtick. What I need in a browser is to have an address bar, some tabs and render websites… Firefox team also started mumbling about AI. It looks like except maybe some niche stuff, my beloved Safari is the only one left that’s normal (I’m primary an iPad user) and it’s a pity they stopped making it for Windows…

Come on. This push to summarize all webpages and written content with is ridiculous.

See this example from Search - in what world is this an adequate summary for an 8,000+ word article that takes 43 minutes to read?

The amount of detail, specificity, narrative, and actual arguments that get lost is mind-boggling.

Everything is just… flattened to the most basic and bare-bones facts.

Every unique part of that piece, every voice, personality - stripped away.
