The sand is soft beneath my feet.

I’m sure I’ve found a pleasant treat.

A metal door swipes across the sky,

removing the sun from the blue sky.

Trapped in a replica of my town,

I watch the sand become dark brown.

My longed-for peace won’t be won

since I’ve trusted the wrong one.

I just started reading Sloane Crosley's new memoir, 'Grief Is for People': https://bookwyrm.social/book/1583999/s/grief-is-for-people

6% in, it's funny and scary.

I added my 2022 reads to SFBA.club. Most were actually audiobooks.

I also added my 2021 reads to SFBA.club. 2021 was probably my worst year ever for reading... I only finished NINE (9) books. As the pandemic dragged on, I couldn't get into anything. I also started my new job just before the year started.

OK, so I want a nice book database for cataloguing my provate book collection and chose . It's nice and available on , but it's not under a free license - its "anti-capitalist license" excludes military and law enforcement and hence doesn't allow everyone to use it as a free license should.

Does anyone have good ideas for alternatives?

@agger @fritjof @kzxpr @fsfe @bookwyrm are you looking to set up a private instance of then? That license relates to running an instance, not being a user of an instance.

A polarizing figure for sure, but still easy to take inspiration from his story and body of work. Overall enjoyed the read on this one.

Book review #8 for 2024 is Robert J. Bulkley's, At Close Quarters: PT Boats in the United States Navy.

Longest audio book I have listened to as of today! Detailed, tedious at times, but a very good history of PT Boat operations in both WW2 theaters. A 5-cup review for its subject and breadth of coverage.☕☕☕☕☕

‘God forbid that a dog should die’: when Goodreads reviews go bad https://www.theguardian.com/books/2024/feb/17/god-forbid-that-a-dog-should-die-when-goodreads-reviews-go-bad

Goodreads is horrible for readers and books. The technical platform is very badly maintained with bugs in the extreme. Amazon mine user data for nefarious purposes, for example, in building concentration camps (ICE).

I recommend anyone who's interested in keeping track of their books in a social way (if one wants; one can also use the platform so that nobody else can see your activity) to use Bookwyrm (https://bookwyrm.social), which is completely open-source and actively maintained by very kind people—you can host your own #Bookwyrm instance, which is BTW built on ActivePub—to whom I donate money to keep the site rolling; no ads, no tracking.

There's also The StoryGraph (https://www.thestorygraph.com) that was created by people who were fed up with Amazon and their #SurveillanceCapitalism. The system is closed-source and actively maintained.

The Darkness That Comes Before, The Prince of Nothing series by R. Scott Bakker

The best epic fantasy book I have read in a while. Tons of names, tribes, nations, cities, countries, factions, individuals clash in a massive once-in-a-millennium undertaking. What more does a bookworm need? Simply top-shelf stuff, imho.

This started as a burst binding and I converted it to sewn on flat cords. I was reading this during my off time at a recent class at the American Academy of Bookbinding and decided I wanted to take a swing at breaking down this type of binding since so many of the books I enjoy are published this way. There are signatures after all...there's just also A LOT of glue...

A question for the #MythologyMonday crowd:

I have curated this list of public domain folk tale collections from around the world on Wikisource, and I am contemplating turning this into #BookWyrm lists - which would include creating entries for the books at OpenLibrary.

However, I am not sure how granular these lists should be. Should I arrange them by continent or by country or what?

Any suggestions?

@independentpen @AimeeMaroux I'm not much of an expert on , but I think cascading lists with sub-lists aren't possible. A work is either within a list, or not.

Also, I can only include whole books (or other distinct works) in Bookwyrm lists - separating individual tales would definitely be too granular.
