Widespread major heat, highly unusual for early June, will expand across most of Western U.S. in coming days (minus some coastal areas). Record breaking high temps most likely Thu and Fri, but may persist in some areas for over a week. [1/2]

In addition to record daytime warmth in some areas, even more locations will record-breaking overnight warmth, with widespread "record high minimum" temperatures during this prolonged event, including at higher elevations. [2/2]

As we already have wildfires going in CA and are set to have scorcher weather Tues - Thu, let me remind folks that not only are N95 masks good for keeping from getting/giving COVID, but also good for filtering smoke from wildfires.

Good to have a supply on hand and to be wearing one.

Never rely on any map or anything you see online to ignore an order to evacuate. The fire officials have information that you do not.

Heatwave on the way so disabled folks who have a need for uninterrupted power for medical devices and need to stay cool should be preparing.

@weatherwest updates us on the outlook.

Make sure you're assessing your situation: What would you do if power went out due to the utility shutting it off to reduce fire risk or due to too many people using the grid at the same time? Need to replace batteries? Have enough ice packs on hand? What's your emergency plan, esp if there's a fire & you have to evacuate during a heat wave?

If you're abled, ask disabled friends if they'd like help and what form they want that help to take in an emergency.

In case there ends up being a wildfire during a heatwave or there's another natural disaster that affects you as a disabled person, The Partnership for Inclusive Disaster Strategies has a hotline you should put in your phonebook.

Prepare for rising heat ahead of time. Check batteries for items you need in case there are planned shut-offs by utilities. Replace those that are dying or dead. Keep rechargeables charged. Freeze bottled water so you have cold water available if power goes out. Repair or replace fans you need.

Think through your needs when it gets hot, including if the power goes out. Prepare now.

If you're in Pacific Gas & Electric (PGE) territory, sign up for PSPS alerts to know when PGE is planning on shutting power off. https://www.pge.com/en/outages-and-safety/safety/community-wildfire-safety-program/public-safety-power-shutoffs.html

The wheels of disability policing grind slowly, but if you're disabled and have medical needs for power/climate control, sign up for PGE's programs. The sooner you do the forms, the sooner you'll likely hear back. Don't delay. https://www.pge.com/en/outages-and-safety/outage-preparedness-and-support/health-and-accessibility-support/disability-disaster-access-and-resources-program.html

Rather strong inter-model ensemble agreement at the moment regarding the growing possibility of a significant and potentially prolonged heatwave across most of the Western U.S. starting around Jun 5-6 as strong/broad ridge builds. Details TBD.
