Yesterday I discovered the bollard from a major path entry to be missing again. I looked around to see if car-centrists had left it out for their convenience. Instead, I saw it tossed over a fence into a dry creek bed. I took a significant risk for myself to get it in the fading sunset light, hanging onto the fence for dear life. I managed to get it, toss it back over the fence, and reinstall it for safety.

We need non-removable bollards. @mastobikes @fedibikes

View from the path over a low chain link fence into a weedy dry creek bed. A thick hollow PVC pipe made into a bollard can be seen.
View standing over the bollard gate to a high traffic mixed use path in Davis, CA. Photo taken when I put the missing bollard back. The reflectors are oriented in the correct directions - one facing out into the street, one facing into the path.

@mastobikes @fedibikes Both UC Davis and City of Davis workers frequently leave the bollards out, not caring about the risk this increases for this high traffic mixed use path. This is the first time I've found the same kind of sabotage I see on campus where they toss the bollard somewhere people can't easily get it to put it back in. The 3 seconds it would take to take it out or put it back again is just too onerous, in their estimation. #DavisCA #CarCentrism

#DavisCA is still car-centric.

Customers of Dutch Bros drive-thru coffee on this very dangerous corner near I-80 routinely hang out into the street in both directions - sometimes several car lengths. City doesn't see that as a regular annexation of public space by a private business, nor pay attn to the danger it creates.

Meanwhile, wheelchair takes up 4/5 width of the narrow sidewalk & the business has put rocks in the landscaping to keep the public from doing the reverse to them.

I'm sad to report that "Bike-Friendly" Davis has at least one Incel Camino. I'm so glad I wasn't on my quad at the time I spotted this. #CarCentrism #DavisCA

Right-wing bankrolling stuff in your town. Just got back from the Davis Ride of Silence, which was organized by the Davis Bike Collective.

The organizers reached out to relatives of those killed, so at two of the sites, we met friends & family of people killed by drivers while riding their bikes in Davis.

This is the ghost bike for Dr. Marilyn Olmstead and her friends & family were there with us along County Road 100A, next to a farm field.

@mastobikes @fedibikes All the friends & relatives who met us at ghost bikes were clearly moved and said they were moved. They weren't all necessarily cyclists themselves. I think the organizers reaching out to them where they knew how to really made an impression and created some bonds that hopefully continue building more understanding in our society at large.

@mastobikes @fedibikes This was the first stop - where a ghost bike already existed since the '90s. The cyclist was killed by a hit & run driver of a tomato processing truck (later caught).

Our group had a hard time pulling aside at this dangerous corner because, as you can see, there isn't good pedestrian safety either.

When you read press releases that Davis, Calfornia is at the top of some cycle-friendliness list again, realize that in many respects #DavisCA is still car-centric. #Cycling

@mastobikes @fedibikes Ghost bike for Tris Yasay, killed by a still-unnamed UC Davis driver employee in May 2022. UC Davis cops/fire were first to respond so all evidence was collected by UC Davis investigating itself. Unsurprisingly, no charges were made by the DA. And instead of examining its own vehicle fleet & retraining its drivers, UC Davis had its cops apply for a grant to "educate cyclists" about safety.

This sculpture is the only shovelware I approve of.

School has kept me so busy that I did not get a chance to go on a road trip to find superblooms, but have these Eschscholzia californica blooming near Shovel Gateway at UC Davis Arboretum. https://arboretum.ucdavis.edu/blog/why-used-shovels

The slow, silent ride will start at the Davis Bike Collective (1221 1/2 4th St ) this Wednesday 5/15 and will visit 4 different locations in Davis where people have been killed while riding their bikes

The route will be 7.5 miles and is expected to take ~1.5 hrs. We will have some flowers to distribute but feel free to bring your own offerings as well.

Good example of how folks focus on houseless people taking up public property while ignoring how housed people do.

This house has been doing construction for months. The sidewalk (sometimes), public parking, and public parkway have been blocked. Now part of the cycle lane is as well.

No one bats an eye. The stuff is not confiscated & taken to the landfill as many cities would do with houseless folks' belongings.#Housing #Parking #Classism #DavisCA @parkingreform

Guess which kind of vehicle CA Legislators have required manufacturers to hard-limit to a top speed of 20 mph - this e-assist quadricycle I ride or the motor vehicle that bent this heavy gauge steel pipe?

It's April 19th and welcome to BikeNite! Thanks for joining, and I hope we all enjoy chatting about cycle stuff! Feel free to answer whenever at your convenience. Anyone can join, now or later. Reply to what you like, and boost for visibility.

We'll start out with our introduction:

Q1. Where are you posting from today? What's going on in your cycle-world?

meganL,
@meganL@mas.to avatar

@ascentale @bikenite A1. Davis, CA, USA. Got out on a late afternoon ride today.

Found more infrastructure to keep out cars that keeps disabled cyclists like me out as well.

Otherwise enjoyable. Trying to make the most of cooler temps before Immolation Season™ arrives.

We have a big problem in with folks who pretend they're riding a e-assist cycle when they like those laws, only acting like a motor vehicle when they like those laws.

This guy illegally passed me on the right when the light turned green (right turn only lane), then pulled ahead and onto the cycle path. It's a Vespa-like motor scooter.

We have a place in town that calls itself AMP Bikes that sells these and food delivery now races along cycle paths and MUP.

When I went to Davis Food Co-op today, same thing happened that made me ride away without groceries yesterday - a rider parked on the end space which is the only space I (and owners of other cycle frame types than standard upright bike) can lock up.

I said "Screw it" and parked in an auto spot instead. This also gives the person in the disabled spot more loading room than they'd have if an auto had parked there.

"Platinum Bike-Friendly" still hasn't replied to the email I sent about the rampant scofflaw parking in the cycle lane. I just sent them more photos today of the same corporation's vehicle parked illegally, blocking visibility & endangering people at an intersection.

We'll see if they continue ignoring me. @cycling @mastobikes @fedibikes

"That sign doesn't apply to me because I'm seeking profit" strikes again.

I've emailed in flagrante delicto photos of businesses flouting the law, but our business-owner city councilman (and now mayor) does not feel like holding business people to the same standards as poor people.

I was reminded about this thread about how breaking the law suddenly "isn't breaking the law" if making a profit is involved by this TDS story. https://youtu.be/EDMinX6t1Zk?si=K3Fkz5sQkmecCxpM&t=627 #BikeTooter #DavisCA #CarCentrism #Capitalism #USpol

@glightly Same overall corporation to blame here. They were already there blocking the way for cyclists & pedestrians when I rode around them at 11:30am and they were still blocking visibility and egress when I finished my shopping at 11:54am.

This is why I think we need a higher standard than just "Yay! Street closed to cars! Yay, parklets!" @bikenite @mastobikes @fedibikes

meganL,
@meganL@mas.to avatar

@loshmi @glightly @mastobikes @fedibikes

100%. Even when they closed a couple blocks off to car traffic (which I'm in favor of), they not only didn't plan for accessibility, nor non-commercial uses of the space by the actual public, they didn't plan for cycle logistics for delivery.

These businesses predicate their business models on breaking the law and abusing public resources, expecting the public to pick up the tab.

UC Davis employees keep taking out and leaving out the bollards meant to protect the cycle/pedestrian/wheelchair priority paths around campus.

Which leaves the way open for jackasses like this one to cruise through. Unfortunately, too fast for me to get a license plate. But he caught my eye and had no remorse. #CarCentrism #DavisCA #UCAccessNow #Cycling

I'm very glad to have gotten a ride in today between rain clouds. I usually ride in the nice-to-ride areas, which also happen to be the areas where I run errands.

Today I rode towards Davis' Auto Row (yes...the "bike friendly" city has its own Auto Row) so it was a very instructive ride on the many places the cycle, wheelchair, and pedestrian infrastructure are missing or grotesquely sub-par. That should help me be more informed for City Council mtgs in future.
