Dr. Peter Carter, Paul Beckwith and Regina Valdez discuss the recent climate catastrophes that occurred as a result of Storm Daniel in both Libya and Greece. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69CjB-pZMrQ
I retraced the path of #floods through the #wadi in #derna, #libya from the lower dam through the city and out to the sea. Thereafter, the camera returns to the center of the city, to Al Sahaba mosque, a prominent, surviving landmark, and looks up south into the mountains. With thanks to #GoogleEarthStudio. Before we're going to have manmade mass-destructive murderous disasters like in Libyan city of Derna almost every day anywhere around the globe in coastal areas.
Relief workers warned Wednesday that Libya's catastrophic floods may bring unexploded bombs and mines from past conflicts to the surface, posing fresh threats to a nation that has already lost more than 11,000 people in the disaster....
“#NorthAfrica is not immune to #ClimateChange, but this is also about #corruption and incompetence. In #Morocco perhaps you had seconds or minutes when the tectonic plates moved, but here in #Libya there was plenty of warning about this hurricane … yet there was no evacuation of #Derna. "
The #UN’s World Meteorological Organization chief Petteri Taalas said many deaths could have been avoided if #EarlyWarning and #EmergencyManagement systems had functioned properly in the war-scarred country. #LibyaFloods

"As many as 2,000 people may have been drowned after a powerful storm unleashed catastrophic #floods in the eastern Libyan city of #Derna.
The deaths occurred after a powerful storm and heavy floods led to the collapse of two ageing dams, which released a swollen fast-moving river that simply washed away at least one neighbourhood."
"“It can’t really be [overstated] how important the infrastructure issue is, because that’s one of the main catalysts for climate displacement,” Benjamin Freedman, an analyst at the Middle East Institute, told Al Jazeera.
The failing dams, alongside migrants “who weren’t necessarily properly settled”, created the “perfect storm for an outrageous humanitarian disaster”, he added."
