oh neat the soundbar can do bluetooth too, and seemingly play bluetooth + tv audio at once.

Would be cooler if I had the PC in this room...but I do have a backup PC I could set up.

For now though, any or games I should use to test this bad boy?

I'm playing Mario Wonder but I assume Nnitendo just...doesn't really use this stuff even in games where it'd work, let alone a 2D one

Okay. ONE improvement with the that you don’t get on other streaming OS’s. You can switch the video output to lock into 4K SDR rather than or +. The reason you would do this is because several series/shows, especially on AppleTV+ (the streaming content service, not the hardware) like Invasion, The Last Thing He Told Me and Foundation, are inexplicably dark as hell when viewed in DV. Viewing in SDR brightens the output considerably. Same with Terminal List. Incredibly dark.

I have no idea why these shows are mastered at such a woeful brightness level but at least the AppleTV has this “solution” for it.

And I hate that you have to turn off the main attracting factors of modern TVs (DoVi color breadth, audio etc) in order to compensate for quirks. Shit really should just be produced properly and WORK properly out of the box without having to fiddle the fuck out of config after config to just get nice audio and video. 🤬

Masochistic idiot that I am, I’ve slunk back a THIRD time to the . To try, ONCE AGAIN, to force myself to like it. Don’t ask me why!

When you have on, the sound volume of everything is reduced. Turn off Dolby and switch it to 5.1 audio and god damn kaboom, back comes the volume.

It just doesn’t make sense! People on forums acknowledge this and still love the thing! STOCKHOLM SYNDROME! Why are people not acknowledging that this device just is not is not IS NOT any sort of magical streaming device of the gods. So many flaws. Still going to use it until I spit the dummy and rip it out again. There has to be some sort of acquired taste I haven’t acquired yet.

Just tested out the new feature on the firmware beta and it works great. Much better than that terrible 3D audio thing they tried before.

I can now have directional sound on my bog standard TV speakers. 😁

I'm looking at music production with an actual 7.1.2 speaker setup and it looks like not only cost is unacceptable for bedroom producers, and the space requirements are rather ridiculous, but also there isn't even a clear answer to "what audio interface and monitors to buy?".

So looks like the only option for hobbyists like me is to get AirPods Max and simulate the environment with its head tracking capabilities and Logic Pro.

I admit, I found this article on by searching for “ is distracting”: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/21/arts/music/dolby-atmos.html

The relevant quote from longtime engineer Susan Rogers: “That was what I noticed listening to ‘When Doves Cry’ in . It sounded amazing, but it was more difficult to assemble it into a unified whole in that private place I listen to . I found it distracting.” Her “knee-jerk reaction was ‘do not want,’” she said. “But over time I may learn to like it.”
