My mother-in-law was one of the first six Wrens to work at Bletchley Park. From her description she was operating ie plug wiring a Bombe.

Collussus was much later and some of the photographs in this BBC article even much more later. Note the 1960s style fluorescent strip lighting in a computer hall. More Cheltenham than Milton Keynes.

She was shocked when Bletchley was declassified to find out a neighbour who she had know for years had also worked there. Neither had breathed a word.

New photos of Collussus : https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-67997406

Today, for a very random reason, I remembered the history of the dead of the mathematician and GCHQ analyst Gareth Williams.

While firms are being faced with criticism for their models containing detailed personal data about individuals, and thinking of how to mitigate this, UK intelligence agencies (e.g. ) are seeking powers to effectively lower their oversight in building models precisely to be able to draw unstructured data into personal data about people, claiming that AI firms can do it (whether or not legally!) but they can't https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2023/aug/01/uk-intelligence-spy-agencies-relax-burdensome-laws-ai-data-bpds?CMP=share_btn_tw

So the usual suspects (, et al) have supposedly been exploiting a backdoor used in emergency services and critical infrastructure comms for over 20 years. Is it any wonder we're seeing renewed attempts on govs' part at weakening for the masses with the likes of the UK's Online Safety Bill and similar legislation in the states?

Incisive oped from former head of cyber security at GCHQ, calling the mass surveillance provision in the UK's Online Safety Bill "a hugely controversial power that damages Britain’s reputation for online security."

Couldn't agree more.

@Mer__edith doesn't have any at all.

Not only will people get jailed for refusal to surrender keys and passwords, violating their right to remain silent and not incriminate themselves, but is literally comitting against entire nations with neither nor declaration of war.
