@kuketzblog interessante Überlegungen! Hat das 6a auch den M2 Chip? Vielleicht ist das PIN Scrambling von noch einen Absatz wert

Android 14 changed the color of the low battery icon from red to white.

Recently, for some reason, I've stopped getting "Battery low" notifications at very low percents...but I still get them at 30% & 25% (I have it set to start at 30%).

...so now I rarely notice when my phone is about to die. This has interrupted me on so many occasions.

My hatred of Android has been growing exponentially lately.

I use , which does a fair amount to curb some of my biggest problems with default .

...but at the end of the day, the ecosystem is built on behalf of & in service of advertisers & spyware manufacturers, so problems like every app spamming notifications persist.

Google has tried to fix the notification spam (probably to prevent competing advertisers from encroaching on their market share), but ended up exacerbating this problem.

Which alternate OS should I install on my backup Android phone, a Google Pixel 5a 5G? I was going to test , but I waited a while and now my phone is only supported until August 2024. https://grapheneos.org/faq#device-lifetime

This is a problem plaguing all Android devices, they become very difficult to keep secure once Google stops providing security updates. seems to provide an extra year: https://calyxos.org/docs/guide/device-support/

I can't find info on long-term security for . https://lineageos.org/

What's the current "state of the art" for both open hardware phones and the OS's available for them? ?

Also not sure what tags to use for such a question.

jameshowell, (edited )
@jameshowell@emacs.ch avatar

@louis @zyd Got a in 2021 and at that point none of the OSes (that I got onto it) were usable at all: pre-alpha buggy. Don't know about now. Not sure if this qualifies as "open hardware."

In 2023 I put on a Pixel 6a and I love it. Hardly any inconveniences, and all of those are likely Android itself. Not open hardware. [EDIT:] I never used Android before, so I don't know, but judging by @JoeRess's and others' complaints about e.g. Google Android on the same hardware, it may be Android.

Curious about the community's thoughts: What's still holding people back from embracing @GrapheneOS It's a mobile OS with a strong focus on privacy and security, which seems to tick many important boxes. Could it be issues with device compatibility, or are key apps/features missing? Maybe it's just a matter of awareness. Keen to understand what barriers exist.

I know I promised to stop mentioning this hacky port of LineageOS, but the Android developer who keeps claiming he gets routinely swatted without any actual evidence to back his claims up actually makes a good point here.

But, as I'm prone to saying, even a broken military clock is right once a day.

@parzzix I’m currently using an iPhone due to iMessage being the only way I could communicate with my family. Tried to show them switching to would be a good option but they weren’t convinced.
But I would switch back to android running or a Pixel with or in a heartbeat if I could.

GrapheneOS: Frequent Android auto-reboots block firmware exploits (www.bleepingcomputer.com)

GrapheneOS, a privacy and security-focused Android-based operating system, has posted a series of tweets on X suggesting that Android should introduce frequent auto-reboots to make it harder for forensic software vendors to exploit firmware flaws and spy on the users.
