My latest pet : Replace the "free" sharing services with simple solution where one has full control of (a) data collection (b) data storage (c) data sharing/visualisation.

If you want to give this like alternative a go, I'd be happy for any and all comments:

The main idea here is that for years I hade 24/7 shared location with trusted circle of people, so that I have a chance of getting help in case something goes significantly sideways on my (mountain) adventures.

And as is getting less and less useful, I thought that finding an alternative for this one use-case should be easy.
It is not. All the solutions I've found have questionable ideas about data processing or steep pricing model or vendor lock-in or all of the above.

So I thought that for folks with similar needs I should build easy(tm) to start & operate alternative.

Being drawn back to #GoogleMaps again by easy search by category (e.g. 'restaurant Cardiff') and customer reviews.

Would love to see #OpenStreetMap improve/add this functionality.

Prime example of engineers not actually living in the real world:

Whoever runs needs to get out and drive the countryside lanes in the UK. While they are 'national' speed limited at 60mph these are NOT 60mph roads. More like 20mph.

The Google maps routing algorithm doesn't take this into account at all so will happily route you down a single lane dirt track thinking it'll save you a few minutes and ends up costing you 20 instead.

Moral of the story: use your product at the edges.

Got invited to this Riverkeeper meeting in Ossining. Planning to take the Hudson line and then either walk or bike the Old Croton Aqueduct from a little out from the Ossining station. says the path surface is dirt. The meeting is April 25 so it could be muddy.. is totally useless. If a car can't drive it, they don't fucking care and the path may as well not exist. With OpenStreetMaps I can make a notation as to condition.

"What Happens to Google Maps When Tectonic Plates Move?"

Great question (think huge earthquakes) and an incredibly interesting read (to me at least!)

As I made my way through this, I couldn't help but think about the precision of weapon systems aiming at a specific spot on the ground, based on potentially faulty map data. 😐

Randomly browsing Google Maps & saw this interesting change:

  • Selecting a place highlights the building
  • Small green arrows appearing, seems to indicate possible entrances/exits
  • Upon further inspection, seems like they could be derived from Street View imagery

Place: Telok Blangah Crescent Market & Food Centre, Singapore.

I'm pretty tired of having to use to share locations with people I'm making appointments with.

I've made a little application to convert the sharing links from to Google Maps which I open in this example, but there's no need in practice, I just have to share it with whoever I want!

I've also set up https://mapu.retiolus.net, which can be activated in the settings, if needed, to resolve certain short links from Google Maps without going through their servers.

Ended up on from a website, and it didn't seem to depict reality. Had to compare it with OSM.

Missing major buildings, roads. Incorrect roads (NE one is a mostly a path). And that's ignoring all the detail, available in OSM.

Oh, and that "bar" on the left in Google Maps? That's a spam entry, advertising bar services for events.

Got asked today about navigating someplace with Google Maps.

First image - OpenStreetMap.
Second - GMaps of the same region.

First, there's a massive difference in the amount of available information.
Second is one housename... in two different locations.

Thank you to all the OSM contributors for creating such a wonderful, worldwide map.
