So I arrived at the house today to find a couple of gas workers removing my gas line.

Which, ok, I do want that. But!! I didn't book it in.

In fact, I called CovAU and to ask about the price, but they couldn't give me a price in advance, and their estimate was 2-4x more than the government rate information, so I explicitly told them not to book. And followed it up with an email saying the same, which they replied to in confirmation.

Has anyone else had this happen?

This Azalea is looking the best in years. The leaves are a healthy, rich green colour. Previously they had a paler mottled appearance. It is autumn, yet it has a couple of flowers. I am not a fan of the frilly, pink flowers of some varieties but I like these flowers.

This plant was given to me by my mother. I receive her excess and unwanted plants. She enjoys buying plants and I enjoy receiving her rejects - a good arrangement.

Want to be an AFL media personality? It's easy — just follow the four-step Kane Cornes plan.

  1. Look up which teams that lost on the weekend.

  2. For each of the teams, come up with a reason why either:

a) It's the players' fault. They're too lazy. Don't train hard enough. Don't put in enough effort!
b) It's the players' fault. They're not skilled enough!
c) It's the coach's fault. Bad tactics. Bad strategy. He's allowing those players to be lazy!
d) It's the recruiter's fault. They picked/traded for the wrong players!

  1. Get your producers to find a passage of play, interview, or press conference you can say backs up your claim.

  2. Go on TV or radio and say what you think confidently, as if you're really pissed off about it.

Yeah, the older Richmond players didn't show enough effort. You really don't care — you used to play for Port Adelaide after all.

But you pretend you do on TV and the radio, because it makes great content.

That's really all it takes, folks!

Stuck on a westbound Collins Street tram near Parliament, something seems to have happened up ahead; can hear the odd siren. Eastbound trains are running OK though. Wonder what the issue is?

Eating lunch in the sun outside Docklands Library. This is much nicer weather than we normally get in late May - usually it's icily cold all day by now.

Someone has stolen the salvia that was thriving in our street garden and covered in flowers for months. It has been carefully dug out.

One of our neighbours has given up on a nice front garden because of people stealing his plants. This is why I stick to nasturtiums and geraniums - free and easy to grow from cuttings or seeds. No-one wants to steal them.

I took a photo yesterday of the IOOF Building as I was passing the corner of Elizabeth and Collins Streets. It opened in 1973 as the MLC building, and I believe it was the tallest building in Melbourne back then. I like the modernist curve.

I am at Cafe Bruce in St Kilda this morning. The owner, Bruce, listed all the famous Bruces and found pictures for the wall. Bruce Wayne and Bruce Banner, Bruce Willis and Bruce Springsteen. Robert the Bruce. Bruce Lee. I can see Bruce Spence and Bruce Almighty. So many Bruces.

Coffee is good too.

'Ditch the lawn' movement in southern Australia shows the benefits of removing the traditional patch of grass in front of homes and planting things that will attract birds etc.

My mother ripped up her front lawn in 1987 and again in her new place in 1993. At the time I thought it was strange but the results in both gardens convinced me that this was a great idea.

If we needed a place for our children to play we walked to a park

I lead a club ride today, only 10km
But.

  • It was my first ride as a leader since I broke my arm 6 months ago
  • It was the first ride for another member in 2 years following knee surgery
  • It was the first ride back for another member after surgery for a life altering condition
So yes it was quite a ride and the sun shone on us
Cycling is amazing no matter how, where and why you do it ❤️🚲

Went to the Albert Park farmers market this morning. Oddly I never buy much at these things, it's mostly an excuse to meet up with friends who do buy stuff while I walk around admiring the produce and meeting dogs. So many dogs!

The Albert Park market is in a park once occupied by a gasworks, nice spot. Also easy to get to via the number 1 tram. 🚃

Market stalls beneath eucalyptus trees. A large red-brick building is in the background.

I am looking forward to running a meetup in next Thursday for technical writers and anyone involved in IT work. In it I will explore some fun activities that you can run with teams of engineers to help them improve their writing skills.

There's lego and games involved.

There is still space for you to come. We also would like to hear your ideas and experience in running activities to help people improve their writing skills.

Artificial turf is really bad for the environment and can heat up to 80 or 90 degrees on a sunny day adding to the heat of the house.

When we bought our house it had a backyard with artificial turf covering a large concrete pad. What can we do to cover the concrete with something better?

Tried a new Coburg cafe today: Grounds of Eden. I had the fabulous Avocado Garden, with avocado and a kale/pomegranate salad on charcoal sourdough with avocado, egg, beetroot hommous and a side of halloumi, along with a few candied nots, lychee and fig and some fresh orange segments + Lemon wedge. Very fresh and tasty! @timrichards wentmore old-style with scrambled eggs
