Why hello (again), Mastodon!

Greetings! I'm Evo, no longer on my own single-instance server, which seemed like a good idea but, franky... I can't be bothered. That, and I'm already paying to run Podvibes, so...

Here's my latest which tells you want to expect from following me here on the Fediverse, in a handy🧵:

Intro, part 4:

- I've been a nerd for nearly 20 years. Lately, I've been getting more and more into the (non-alcoholic) side, for when I want a beer w/o the buzz.

- Not all that much about just getting stoned (though that's perfectly fine), but more about the strains and terpenes I use to help manage my anxiety, depression, and insomnia.

The part of my brain and tastebuds that loved craft cocktails is now into shrubs. I make my own (mostly pear and ginger), and with $3 of stuff from the farmers’ market I can make myself a dozen drinks or so. I like mixing it with tonic water or even Choya (the NA one from Daiso). I have always been a soda disliker, so this is perfect.

Pears are my favorite fruit, so I love drinking them too! So hard to get a good pear-based beverage in a store that doesn’t taste like crap, too.

Have you ever thought about how Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous are probably the most successful* living organizations? It's proof that the bottom-up decentralized confederated model works on a global scale.

If you're an anarchist and unfamiliar, I recommend checking out The Twelve Traditions (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twelve_Traditions).

That @adam is fine with saying that the AP, Reuters, CNN and NYT had journalists embedded with on even though @Johncdvorak points out it's unsubstantiated, just cause it paints the M5M in a bad light, is why you shouldn't trust him on anything. He has become the perfect example of his favorite Dutch saying.

Another review. This time, it’s Athletic Brewing’s All Out, which they call a non-alcoholic extra dark. And that’s probably smart. Calling it a stout, porter… those all have expected flavor profiles. And thus far, I haven’t found many NA beers in stouts or porters that weren’t… blah.

This one, however, is working for me.

The back of the can says it’s an especially bold and dark brew with a silky, full-bodied mouthfeel (spot on, but in an NA kinda way), with a pleasantly toasty finish (I’ll allow it) and notes of coffee and bittersweet chocolate (yes to both).

It didn’t mention the nose, which is lovely. The taste is a bit watery, which is to be expected. But all things considered, I like it, and look forward to adding a few to the fridge.

Another review. This time it’s Wren House Brewing’s Non-Alcoholic Spellbinder.

The boozy version of this beer is, without question, one of the best IPAs made in . And I will cut you if you disagree. This, Church Music from The Shop, and Mother Road’s Tower Station are currently top dogs. So when I saw the NA Spellbinder at King’s today, I nabbed it. This is my review.

The nose is very reminiscent of most NA IPAs. Not all that pleasant. And it tastes like it smells—very… vegetal. Again, like a lot of NA IPAs. It’s hops-forward from start to finish, but with that weird NA aftertaste. Not much pine, but some citrus to kickstart the salivation. The mouthfeel is very good. Not nearly as thin as competitors. It “feels” like a Spellbinder and is almost chewy.

Unfortunately, I can’t say this is a great NA beer. Which is sad because Wren House is a fabulous brewer! But even though I’m disappointed, I applaud them for the effort. I hope they continue exploring an NA line, perhaps not as “alternate” versions of their excellent lineup, but by innovating new NA-only options.

This is as you would expect as close to the target as you can get without actual ethanol. Mouthfeel, appearance, foam, finish, aroma--checks across the board. I wish I enjoyed hazy IPA's more.

I picked up a pack of these when I was running errands the other day. No sweetener but a brewer who knows hops. I only get a little of that vegetal flavor I find common in commercial hop waters and teas. I find a little citric acid and even less sweetener balances that out in less skilled hands like mine. The quality of hops I can get as a home brewer is of course so much poorer.

I would get this again but making my own is much cheaper. I'd like to get back to having it on tap.
