The 90s were awesome because a song about a band's unabashed love for peaches could become a Top 40 hit, and the accompanying album could go TRIPLE Platinum.

evoterra,

@killyourfm Cake and POTUSA are but two of the greatest and weirdest bands of that era. So, so fab.

I started my with the same short workout sequence. That’s 2 days in a row.

Granted, I only started it 2 days ago, but I’m taking the win and calling it a streak.

Kidney Stone Saga Update:

I just finished the 24-hour urine collection procedure and have sent the test sample off for analysis. But prior to that, I was genuinely worried about exceeding the maximum capacity of the collection container.

Thankfully, I did not. However, I did produce 3 liters, which seemed like a lot. And yeah, it is. Mount Sinai sais:

"The normal range for 24-hour urine volume is 800 to 2,000 milliliters per day (with a normal fluid intake of about 2 liters per day)."

Yeah, I blew by that. Which I take to mean that dehydration isn't a major factor in my stone formation. But I'll speak to the doc about that more.

Hard Truth:

A.I. isn't going back in the box. You can convince yourself and your few associates to not use it, but nothing is going to stop others from using it.

And yes, I know it comes with hazards. That's not my point.

The point is that you will find very very few instances in history where a technology that was put into the market, was successfully halted. I'm not saying it's never happened, but the odds aren't in your favor.

If you're worried about people, focus on UBI and healthcare.

evoterra,

@Mrfunkedude Very true. I hate how companies are quickly—too quickly, methinks—rushing to replace people with these LLM/ML tools. But we live here now. There will be huge mistakes. Fortunes won. Lives ruined. New industries will grow. Many will crumble. Legacies will be obliterated. Lamentations will be made. And Sarah Conner may or may not be found.

As much as I want to celebrate these results as a repudiation of the politics of the ultra nationalistic right wingers, I honestly think it’s because Nevada GOP voters didn’t have their favorite fascist on the ballot.

I’ve zero personal interest in spending a moment on algorithm-driven centralized platforms, but I do have professional interests.

Are there any bridging options or Zapier-like integrations to post content to Bluesky coming down the pike I should be watching now that it’s out of invite-only stage?

I'm doing a Spanish lesson before I start writing (another way to procrastinate!), and I just learned that what we call board games in English are called table games in Spanish (juegos de mesa).

In casinos, the games played at tables are called table games, so I imagine this could cause some confusion for people.

It's also interesting to me because I have an upcoming segment on calques, which are literal translations, like when Spanish-speaking people say they are going to "make a party."

evoterra,

@grammargirl Hrm. I wonder if there’s a shift towards “table top” from “board” games in the US?

Or is the Geekdom (of which I am an associate member) protective of the term, and refer to “board games” when playing vanilla games with vanilla friends, and “table top games” when playing more complex games with… well, I’m not sure “more complex” friend is fair to either side, so I’ll go with “geeky” friends.

Happy Unsubscribe From All Substack Newsletters Day to all those who celebrate!

Since Dec 21, I've been using a Zapier integration to auto-reply to any Substack newsletters I had subscribed to, encouraging them to leave the Nazi-platforming-and-OK-with-it platform and stating that I would be unsubscribing at the end of January.

Today is the day, and I just unsubscribed to a couple dozen newsletters, many of which had already moved, many more that were abandoned long ago by the creator, and a bunch that are still there. Which is their choice.

This is mine.

evoterra, to random

You know that creator who makes that thing you love and doesn't charge anything for it? They might be struggling. A little support—financial, moral, and otherwise—can go a long way.

The… uh, output has come with a bit more burning and a more sanguine. (Not the 1st definition).

I may need a little bit of .

I’m considering migrating backwards from Firefish to Mastodon. The “why” doesn’t matter. It’s something I’m contemplating for reasons.

I’m currently using to run my single user Firefish instance, and my plan is to use them (or another) to host my single user Mastodon instance.

Same domain, btw.

I can’t find any info on this reverse migration. But it’s gotta be possible, right?

Just how big of a deal was yesterday’s announcement by Apple that they’d soon start showing transcripts for every single podcast episode on their app?

Big enough that literally every story in today’s edition of Podnews—the industry’s standard daily news source—was about transcripts.

The. Entire. Issue.

This impacts every podcaster and listener. Yes, including you.

RE: https://social.podnews.net/users/podnews/statuses/111822160661578899

evoterra, to random

Don't get me wrong: I'm still very excited that Apple Podcasts will soon display transcripts for listeners. My bitching is very inside baseball (but still pretty serious).

Here's what I think happened: Apple has been working on auto-generated transcripts for a while. That's hard with podcast audio for a variety of reasons ranging from dynamic content to processing power to a bunch of complicated stuff I'm not even thinking of.

I further speculate the team working on that non-trivial task was nearing the finish line when another team/person at Apple Podcasts said "well... what about the tens or hundreds of thousands of shows that already create their own transcripts and associate them with the enclosed audio file in the RSS feed?"

... and now we've got this hybrid model that puts the default emphasis on the generated version, unless you opt out of it.

Any takers?

evoterra, to random

Hold the happiness, and what the fresh hell is this, Apple?

No. If you detect the <podcast:transcript> tag in a feed, you fucking use the contents of that tag by default. You do not auto-generate. Why in the hell else would I put them in the feed unless I wanted you and every other listening app to use them.

I'm really hoping this is an accident. Because if not... it's just dumb.

evoterra,

More from Apple support docs:

"All transcripts are subject to quality standards. Files that do not meet standards will not be displayed."

"Make sure..." "Your transcripts are free of spelling and punctuation errors, and include all segments of the episode."

Uh-huh. And you want to overwrite included transcripts in favor of your auto generated ones. Because auto-gen transcripts are known for their accuracy.
