Protected cycle lanes in Berkeley have are on indefinite hold due to concerns from people who primarily drive. @inliuofjoan asks:
Q3. What's the most ridiculous reason you've heard against bike lanes/infrastructure, given with a straight face?
I'll go first - after years of insisting his tenants need cars and rental property values will go down because no one will rent there, a local landlord changed tactics: bike lanes will make me raise rent.
#BikeNite A3 the #Portland bureau of transportation (#PBOT) had hired a contractor to grind off a recently painted bike lane, because:
"...did not give adequate notices to the adjacent residents, and we immediately heard concerns from residents with hardships presented from removing the [free] on-street parking."
Volunteers from @bikeloudpdx shouldn't need to stand in front of #PBOT contractors' trucks to stop them from removing #pdxBikes infrastructure, but that's where we are with the current dysfunction at city hall. (Yes, even while they scramble to fill a budget hole that will cost union jobs.) Get involved and let #Portland's elected officials know that #ClimateAction, #SafeStreets & #VisionZero are popular + too important to trade for a few free on-street #parking spaces.
"Just today I biked on the new protected bike lanes on SW Broadway and one block was so full of leaves and water that I had to leave the lane and merge into a shared lane... Dirty bike lanes have been a perennial problem and the #Portland transportation bureau has yet to offer a strategy or plan to tackle it." #PBOT#pdxBikes 2021, and this year too.
What an absurd waste of city resources to grind off a #pdxBikes lane because some NIMBY with the commissioner's phone number didn't like it. #PBOT should be grinding off the yellow centerlines, which nobody was consulted on. #Vision60or70something#PredatoryDelay#DefundDOTs
We are ashamed our city is working to remove critical #pdxBikes infrastructure already built and spending their valuable resources on this removal over the much needed and overdue work to make our most dangerous streets safer. In the middle of a traffic violence epidemic, in the middle of #PBOT's own budget crisis.
When was the outreach process about the yellow centerline paint and speeding cars? #ClimateCrisis#VisionZero
#Portland let #PBOT know what you think about #SundayParkways car-free streets and be sure to ask why they don't just leave it up or do it every weekend at least.
holy crap, does anybody at the city of #Portland realize they're spending $2M/day to fill the streets with cars and thusly crush them into gravel? #PBOT needs to acknowledge that every mile driven costs us money.
Tonight from Multnomah Arts Center at 5pm, a route between the Multnomah and Hillsdale neighborhoods -- one that's not #BarburBlvd and doesn't go over too many hills, but does get too much car traffic. Join us for a look at the issues and #PBOT's plans to build stuff that would still leave us with incomplete #pdxBikes and #SafeRoutesToSchool networks in 2026. Ends at 6pm Multnomah NA #transportation open house event at the MAC.
#PBOT director said the #swBroadway#pdxBikes lane is "mired with controversy." 🙄 which is code for commissioner mapps is trying to woo the business association, or roughly 3-5 millionaires. Regular #Portland#transportation politics, for and by people with their brains stuck in traffic.
#PBOT coulda saved $3-4M on the cost of "Better #Naito Forever" by simply not choosing to jam two lanes of 40mph traffic into the budget, requiring more expensive traffic signals, etc. They work so hard making the street less safe and then cry about not having the money to "add safety".
F using these rounded-over "traffic separators" for bikeway protection #PBOT. Drivers who shouldn't be parking trucks here anyway can't be bothered to maneuver between the gaps that were designed to be driven through... this whole design makes me sick.
#WorkZoneWTF this fence is either protecting pedestrians from people on bikes or protecting drivers from pedestrians, but definitely #PBOT thumbing their nose at people on #pdxBikes.
"Oregon (#pdx) Metro, which distributes much of the federal funds #PBOT uses for new projects, may have had their interest piqued by the Broadway debacle. In a statement to the Mercury, Nick Christensen, a spokesperson for Metro said the agency is “monitoring how PBOT implements grants awarded by Metro..." 🧐
#PBOT, the bureau of transportation, could not figure out how to make this part a bus lane, and the bike lane is the rightmost 3 inches on the white stripe unless you want to chip your teeth riding over that culvert. #pdxBikes#PDX#BusLanes
Well, #PBOT might not be cleaning the streets, dealing with landslides, removing ice, or doing anything else as rapidly, often, or ever, compared with pre-COVID times, but they will get to it eventually. Probably. Maybe. Allowing for staff. If it's still in the budget.
#PBOT's director taking meetings with Terry Parker and then making this move, seems like she might be on team #DefundDOTs 🙄 Really out of touch with #Portland values and PBOT's adopted plans, etc.
#PBOT's Disaster Ride at 10am Saturday from Irving Park #Portland#DisasterPreparedness information, what if you have to ride #pdxBikes in the rain 😂, and learn about our Neighborhood Emergency Team network.
