Protected cycle lanes in Berkeley have are on indefinite hold due to concerns from people who primarily drive. @inliuofjoan asks:

Q3. What's the most ridiculous reason you've heard against bike lanes/infrastructure, given with a straight face?

I'll go first - after years of insisting his tenants need cars and rental property values will go down because no one will rent there, a local landlord changed tactics: bike lanes will make me raise rent.

A3 the bureau of transportation () had hired a contractor to grind off a recently painted bike lane, because:

"...did not give adequate notices to the adjacent residents, and we immediately heard concerns from residents with hardships presented from removing the [free] on-street parking."

Volunteers from @bikeloudpdx shouldn't need to stand in front of #PBOT contractors' trucks to stop them from removing #pdxBikes infrastructure, but that's where we are with the current dysfunction at city hall. (Yes, even while they scramble to fill a budget hole that will cost union jobs.) Get involved and let #Portland's elected officials know that #ClimateAction, #SafeStreets & #VisionZero are popular + too important to trade for a few free on-street #parking spaces.

"Just today I biked on the new protected bike lanes on SW Broadway and one block was so full of leaves and water that I had to leave the lane and merge into a shared lane... Dirty bike lanes have been a perennial problem and the #Portland transportation bureau has yet to offer a strategy or plan to tackle it." #PBOT #pdxBikes 2021, and this year too.

What an absurd waste of city resources to grind off a lane because some NIMBY with the commissioner's phone number didn't like it. should be grinding off the yellow centerlines, which nobody was consulted on.

We are ashamed our city is working to remove critical #pdxBikes infrastructure already built and spending their valuable resources on this removal over the much needed and overdue work to make our most dangerous streets safer. In the middle of a traffic violence epidemic, in the middle of #PBOT's own budget crisis.

When was the outreach process about the yellow centerline paint and speeding cars? #ClimateCrisis #VisionZero

holy crap, does anybody at the city of realize they're spending $2M/day to fill the streets with cars and thusly crush them into gravel? needs to acknowledge that every mile driven costs us money.

Tonight from Multnomah Arts Center at 5pm, a route between the Multnomah and Hillsdale neighborhoods -- one that's not and doesn't go over too many hills, but does get too much car traffic. Join us for a look at the issues and 's plans to build stuff that would still leave us with incomplete and networks in 2026. Ends at 6pm Multnomah NA open house event at the MAC.

#PBOT director said the #swBroadway #pdxBikes lane is "mired with controversy." 🙄 which is code for commissioner mapps is trying to woo the business association, or roughly 3-5 millionaires. Regular #Portland #transportation politics, for and by people with their brains stuck in traffic.

coulda saved $3-4M on the cost of "Better Forever" by simply not choosing to jam two lanes of 40mph traffic into the budget, requiring more expensive traffic signals, etc. They work so hard making the street less safe and then cry about not having the money to "add safety".

bad and their yesterday:

  1. for no reason on the 3-lane stretch of
  2. trucks parked blocking the bike lane on "Better Forever" 🙄
  3. construction junk blocking the bike lane for no reason on NE Multnomah
  4. uber/lyft waiting(?) in the same bike lane
  5. ~10 drivers on 33rd that badly needed to line up 2x2 at a red light on the next block (Broadway) couldn't stop for a second while I wait to cross 🙄
  6. jerk doing 45 on ~36th, a narrow side street
enobacon,
@enobacon@urbanists.social avatar

F using these rounded-over "traffic separators" for bikeway protection . Drivers who shouldn't be parking trucks here anyway can't be bothered to maneuver between the gaps that were designed to be driven through... this whole design makes me sick.

  1. this fence is either protecting pedestrians from people on bikes or protecting drivers from pedestrians, but definitely thumbing their nose at people on .

Just imagine how much money and environmental destruction we would save if DOTs took #20isPlenty and #VisionZero seriously instead of building 2x2 racing lanes for cars in each direction so drivers can go sit at a red light slightly sooner and admire each others debts for longer. #pdxTraffic #FuckCars #InducedDemand #PBOT #ClimateCrisis #HousingCrisis #CarSupremacy #SeeYouAtTheNextLight you're only averaging 18mph by the time it turns green anyway. 🤷 #pdxBikes

Well, might not be cleaning the streets, dealing with landslides, removing ice, or doing anything else as rapidly, often, or ever, compared with pre-COVID times, but they will get to it eventually. Probably. Maybe. Allowing for staff. If it's still in the budget.
