I've been trying for 1.5 hours now to figure out how to use a debugger in #Perl and am reminded once again that this entire language is an enormous fucking garbage fire, especially considering documentation.
My take-away was pretty much: "Guys, this timekeeping stuff is so hard, you have no idea."
So what I learned, really, was never try to roll your own #time library. People who have worked on it for years say it's basically impossible. Use their code; at least it will be less wrong than whatever you would have come up with.
Tried to use it on my second 💻 today, to no avail and much grinding of teeth.
I'm not setting up any more #venv . I'm fed up. I'm bloody rewriting everything, even libraries in #perl so it works proper on #unix damn it. And maybe throw a look at some #zig porting while at it.
Zurück in Leipzig vom Deutschen #Perl Workshop #gpw2024 in #FrankfurtM. Geschafft, aber mit vielen netten Begegnungen, einigen Anregungen und einer konkreten Lösung für ein Problem, an dem ich zuvor stundenlang erfolg- und scheinbar aussichtslos geforscht hatte. 🎉
Danke an die Organisatoren! Bis nächstes Jahr in #München! 👋
Most of the MetaCPAN core devs will be attending the Perl Toolchain Summit in Lisbon next month. We plan to get a lot of work done. There is still time to come on board as a sponsor.
Computer Science professor Bob Fulkerson joins the show to discuss his BBS days including his stewardship of the Endless Forest BBS in Omaha. Bob also discusses facets of teaching Computer Science and his love for the Perl programming language. #bbsing#perl#python
(Update your PCRE if you don't have \b yet.
Offer void in sed which only offers -E,-r ERE.👎
Grep now has -w (word match) and -P PCRE.👍 #perl remains home of the most PCRE.)
Bash is a SHELL and isn't necessarily a programming language but can be pretty good. PERL was essentially created for system admin / automation and reporting. It is awesome at parsing log files and other sources, hence the nickname: Perfectly Eclectic Rubbish Lister
And don't laugh, but I do a lot of scripting (non web) work in PHP as well. #DevOps#PERL#PHP
@metacpan I’m sorry, but messages addressed to @Perl are no longer reposted to the 492 members of the Perl community that followed it on the #fediverse. There is no longer any point in tagging posts with that address as the owner of https://chirp.social shut it down at the end of February.
You should continue to use the #Perl hashtag, though!
