Thanks again to @SweetAIBelle for extensive contributions to OS/1337, making the pipeline and scripts to reproduceably build OS/1337 images and it's parts more flexible and nifty.
i've been using vanilla facebook a lot for a story i'm working on and it really feels like using an ancient, unsupported technology. its UX is horrible and things like messenger etc load incredibly slow. astoundingly bad
heise+ | Gebrauchte Thin-Clients: Auf was Sie achten müssen – kaufen, reinigen, aufrüsten
Wir zeigen, wie man Thin Clients billig einkauft, warum man vollständige Geräte kaufen sollte und wie man den Thin Client für den ersten Einsatz vorbereitet.
Starting the #selfhosting journey on #raspberrypi is an interesting and humbling journey. First I bought a second generation pi just to realize #armhf is holding me back. Then I bought a 3B+ on where the things I want to use, magically don't work. Currently I am thinking about getting a #ThinClient :welp:
heise+ | Ausprobiert: So schlägt sich ein Thin Client als Desktop-Ersatz
Günstige Thin Clients lassen sich für viele Projekte einsetzen. Aber kann man damit Texte schreiben, Bilder bearbeiten und Videos schneiden? Wir probierens aus.
#Documentation is key and @Raspberry_Pi basically owns every "competitor" because #Discord is not a valid excuse or replacement for writing actual documentatation because it has inacceptable ToS & is #loginwalled aka. not searchable.
@CraftComputing Either way I've to agree with the conclusion and I assume this thing was designed as an industrial / embedded device that is basically just a leg up from a #ThinClient in terms of I/O and for that it's fine...
Personally, I do like the fact that #ServeTheHome isn't just doing #HardwarePorn like #LinusTechTips but also looking at more affordable and reasonable options.
#ReUse & #UseLonger are not only cheaper but also more envoirmentally friendly, and from my personal experience, getting some relatively-new #ThinClient that may even be #fanless is a cheao, easy and useful starting point for a #MiniServer...
@feoh I've grown tired of using virtual machines for #hosting
The issue is that you have to be super-careful with the host machine. If you mess something there, you can bring down the entire hosted infra.
I've been building my own network using #Dell#Wyse and #Lenovo#ThinkCentre#ThinClient s.
They come in variety of configuration, from weak AMD or Celerons to beefy Core i8, do not take much place and power. Passive cooling makes them silent. After-market after-lease machines are very cheap.
Also most people - espechally #TechIlliterates and big companies - are doing more #Cloud-based #SaaS than ever and basically turn everything into a #ThinClient.
Storing your personal data, family photos, and other files in the cloud may be utilized for machine learning and AI purposes by ToS. It doesn't matter if it is a free or paid service. These greedy companies will not stop. Unfortunately, there is no way to prevent this from happening besides discontinuing the use of nearly all cloud services.
@aurora sadly every competitior just vomits out some boards with shit to nonexistent documentation.
You might - if you don't need #ARM64 but could also use #ix86 / #amd64 - choose some #ThinClient like a #hp#T620 which can be had for as little as €30 with power supply, optional stand, 4GD DDR3L-SODIMM and 8GB M.2 B-Key SSD.
