Dark red symbols are MODIS and VIIRS satellite heat detections within prior 6 hours. To learn about the limitations of this data please read the “Map tips” link in upper left corner.

I am looking for recommendations for ‘best practices’ for producing evacuation maps due to wildland fires.
What are the characteristics of a good evacuation map?
What not to do when making an evacuation map?
I live in the wildland urban interface of King County WA (county seat Seattle). My plan is to find out what the county would currently do for an evacuation map and then suggest improvements. #PNW#PugetSound#WAfire
K5: “#Seattle City Light says it is closely monitoring the #SourdoughFire burning near its Skagit Hydroelectric Project...Currently…nothing is critically threatened, with dams and major infrastructure remaining safe thanks to the efforts…but they are continuing to watch conditions and put protective measures in place.”
YN/BH: “The fire hasn’t gone all the way down to those structures. We still want to treat them as if they are at risk”
August 5 morning. #SourdoughFire, Diablo WA.
Infrared flight last night 8:17pm. IR analyst determined 1,176 acres burned. However, analyst was not able to fully review area shaded white on the map.
Highway 20 (North Cascades Highway) is currently closed.
July 29 late afternoon. Interactive #GIS map shows satellite heat detection for #EagleBluffFire near #Oroville WA.
Some heat detections are likely smoke in the air but not fire on the ground (at least yet). But with that said, never rely on any map to ignore an order to evacuate.
Yellow squares are heat detection by GOES West satellite. Heat locations are only approximate. Most likely not all the yellow area is burning. Heat detections are sometimes just smoke+embers. #WAfire#WAwx#wildfire
July 4 evening. #McEwanFire a few miles NE of Shelton Washington. Evacuations underway.
When map opens it shows heat detections from MODIS and VIIRS satellites. That data not real time, locations only approximate and sometimes ‘false positive’. To learn more click “Map tips” upper left corner. #PNW#WAfire#WAwx#Wildfire
18:10 Monday - Another large #wildfire between Prosser and Benton City, Washington. This one has jumped the Yakima River and Interstate 82. Many roads, including the interstate, are closed.
July 3. #Tunnel5Fire near Underwood WA. Map shows MODIS/VIIRS satellite heat detection.
To read the fire weather forecast, open the map, click the map, scroll down in the data that appears and then follow the link.
The map has lots of #GIS fire related layers you can turn on/off/restack. The ‘top’ layer can be clicked to see attribute data. Need help? See 2 links upper left corner of the map. #WAfire#WAwx#Geospatial#ArcGIS#Leaflet
