So, Internet, I'll ask you. A common question when I was on Reddit discussing soccer matches. What are you drinking while you watch? I've got a nice Ginger Beer. #WWC#WWC2023#FIFAWWC#MastodonFC
I wonder if we’ll ever see the referee used as a tactical devise. Like kicking the ball at an opponent to get a throw or a goal kick. Kicking the ball at the ref when you’re in trouble to get a drop ball. #wwc#wwc2023#FIFAWWC#WorldCup#WorldCup2023#MastodonFC@wwc
Overall an amazing Women's World Cup. Think about all of the countries who achieved great things: #Jamaica, #Morocco, #Nigeria, #Colombia, and others who proved just how much progress the women's game has made globally in the last several years. This has been probably the most competitive women's tournament that has ever taken place.
The next World Cup will be in 2027, and I have no doubt the game will be elevated even higher still.
This whole #WorldCup has been a wildly emotional ride in the best possible sense. Despite the #Matildas’ loss to the #Lionesses, I can’t find it in myself to be glum whatsoever because I’m just so excited for what’s next for women’s football/soccer on the global stage, and mainstream recognition of these athletes’ excellence is only just beginning. Onwards and upwards. #WWC#AUSvENG#MastodonFC
#WomenWhoCode is shutting down for funding shortfalls. I can’t think of a more dire canary in the Silicon Valley coal mine than this. We can expect a social fascist turn in the IT industry from here out as the remaining jobs not taken by AI are rationed out to men only.
$4m is chump change for infotech capitalists, a few bucks tossed to a pan handler. That they won’t fund #WWC anymore isn’t an economic decision, but palpably a policy priority toward a hard social rightward turn.
Yet another strange and poor decision from #VAR in this tournament for me in the #ENGvNGA match.
Was a clear shove in the area that would have been a free kick anywhere else on the pitch. Saw very little in the VAR replay that indicated a "clear and obvious error" to have it overturned.
I will never be able to not get emotional when watching the #England#Lionesses drive deep into the latter stages of tournaments and finals.
As someone who has seen and experienced first hand the challenges and barriers to girl's and women's football in England and just how far things have come from the days when people would openly laugh, mock and discourage girls from playing, it always elicits strong emotions in me.
Disappointed as I feel her conduct marred the win somewhat as well as her own legacy in this tournament, as she's been so good up until the Nigeria game.
That said, it's easy to forget that she's just 21 years old. Definitely something she'll reflect and learn from, hopefully.
Comfortable win for #France, then, against a team from #Morocco who did well to reach the knockout stages but didn't have the quality to match a resplendent French team in the round of 16. Sad for them they didn't get a goal.
France vs. #Australia in the quarter final is going to be a different game and very challenging for both teams, one would feel.
All the QF matches are resolved now. Excited and hyped for all of them!
Wow. Is it just me, or is this a particularly rough game? I've seen some grabbing from both teams, with one team especially bad. The ref doesn't seem to care. @wwc#wwc#FIFAWWC
Painful article to read by The Times and I think dismissing England's game as simply "strong & fast" is doing them a disservice and a massive oversimplification.
That said, the core of it is right. The Spanish team are setting new standards of technical prowess and their technical skills are something all teams should aspire to.
