I'm going to continue to insist that one of the richest men ever to live, and a critical US Defense contractor, literally being in the business of mainlining and spreading Nazism is a bigger issue than anything being chanted on any college campus. https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2024/05/i-read-everything-elon-musk-posted-for-a-week-send-help/

He didn't say "Bigger than anything being chanted on any college campus." He said "a bigger issue than anything being chanted on any college campus." The key word being "issue." The protests are not an issue, or a problem, or anything to take police action on. Those cops should go to Twitter's data centers instead, and shut them down for stealing water. And also uh, Nazi propaganda.

Nobody's disrespecting protestors here.

Wow, that's... so all the people foolishly falling in with bigotry thinking themselves the majority are just one shift in rhetoric away from becoming The Enemy. I don't think I've ever heard that argument before. Not so clearly said.

I have been smok`n weed in a legal state now for a few years. Growing up I was warned that pot is a gateway drug leading to harder drugs.

My question is, "When do I reach this gateway?", because I just don't have the desire to get any higher than what weed does. So I think all those anti-pot campaigns are flat out lying.

There's your conspiracy right there.

cy,

My mother tried smoking weed, and she had a really bad reaction with paranoia and head voices and everything. Swore off cannabis for life. Some time later, she began smoking tobacco, and continued for the next 60 years or so.

I've never had access to cannabis myself. Lots of chances to start smoking cigs though...

Rainworld is a terrible unfun game, but of course the slugcats caught my attention. It's interesting how much of an anti-Buddhist message it pushes. To say that enlightenment is a doomed path, and suffering is the reason for existence. (Seriously that game is suffering.) Makes me kind of wish I could play games sometimes, just for that intriguing way of thinking. Wish I could make games more than play them.

cy,
@cy@fedicy.us.to avatar

Dunno about bloated, but I still say escalating privileges is always going to be less secure than dropping privileges. sudo tries to make sure nobody unauthorized is doing the escalating, but it can't ask a password every time. Comparatively, getty can ask for a password every time, and once logged in as root you can drop to a normal user without a password, then nobody who gets control can do anything ever as root.

I dunno, I haven't had sudo installed for quite a while.

I want to learn how to make small programs like desktop apps for a single purpose or Minecraft mods to do one specific thing. I know how to do basic scripting but scripts can't do everything. I don't know where to start besides "learn a programming language", which isn't the issue at all, I need to learn how to use a programming language, not just know one. You can't just learn C or Java & then be able to do anything with it, you have to learn how to make an executable out of your code & how to use libraries & how to package it & install the program you made. Every tutorial or class I've seen on programming only teaches how to write the code in a text file & not how to actually use it once it's written. What's the point if I can't even use it? It also just makes it way more difficult to learn when you can't see how it's doing something useful for you.

cy,
@cy@fedicy.us.to avatar

Well, you can start by looking at the source code of... uh... uhm... ._.;

The way I learned to make a C file do something was to open up Borland C++ in uh... the 90's, so don't do that. (Beware of outdated advice this stuff is kind of old!)

The way I do it these days is something called a "shell" which is a program that takes typed commands, and runs them. Not C files directly, but I can do like:

$ gcc -o someprogram somesource.c<br></br>$ ./someprogram<br></br>

It is pretty ridiculous to teach the syntax but not how to get it to do things. I blame closed source software, and their culture of never sharing anything and reinventing the wheel badly. But look for tutorials on the specific tools, like how to use gcc, GNU make, or bash.
https://www3.ntu.edu.sg/home/ehchua/programming/cpp/gcc_make.html

Just a warning, I won't touch Minecraft mods with a ten foot pole. Especially since Microsoft's acquisition, people making mods are pretty much unpaid Microsoft employees. I think you even have to sign an NDA to get the tools to write them. Sometimes I mess around with Minetest, but really it's... too much of a time sink, playing those games.

cy,
@cy@fedicy.us.to avatar

@jackemled Oh but yeah, if you stick with open source programs, one of the best ways is to find a project that does something neat, and download its source to investigate how it's done. That'll be the source code, and the files to build it together. Start simple though, like uh... libb64. Also ask someone about anything in it that doesn't make sense. (Ask me!)

https://github.com/libb64/libb64/

cy,
@cy@fedicy.us.to avatar

I haven't looked into Minecraft modding in years, and didn't really do much the one time I did, so you probably know better than I do. But I do mean free as in open source, just to be sure. Hard to learn java with a java program that lets you drag & drop, but hides all the actual java.

Bash loops ehh, I usually just use C for that, but I do have to run the compiler using a shell, at first. It's like a bootstrapping thing. Has to start out as .sh since that's what they give as the standard way to talk to computer. I guess it's kind of like learning to use an IDE?

Let me explain this real slow.

  1. I borrow $100 from you today.
  2. I pay you $10 every day for a year.
  3. I have paid you back $3,650
  4. I still owe you $90 somehow.
  5. You then "forgive" the $90 debt.

In this scenario, absolutely nobody is paying anybody $90. Nobody is being stiffed $90. Nobody is being forced to pay someone else's $90 debt. Absolutely nobody is "getting a $90 handout for free".

What's happening is you have been paid back your original $100 and then profited a mere $3,550 on top of that and we're saying that's enough profit.

This post is about student loan forgiveness.

cy,
@cy@fedicy.us.to avatar

@Lana and debt forgivness has existed for just as long. It's only the recent colonial/capitalist era that people suddenly decided that no debts can be forgiven ever.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_debt_relief

The earliest known debt cancellation was proclaimed by Enmetena of Lagash c. 2400 BCE.
Similar measures were enacted by later Sumerian, Babylonian and Assyrian rulers of Mesopotamia, where they were known as "freedom decrees" (ama-gi in Sumerian).

From what I read on it by David Graeber, the Babylonian king had to periodically forgive all debts in the city, because literally everyone became a debt slave to the temple, so they all started depopulating the city en-masse, because back then there was a place to retreat where the debt collectors couldn't follow.

Tariffs in general hurt consumers

seriously? Close the loopholes, but tariffs do not hurt the consumer nearly as much as free trade hurts the citizen.

Why can’t we fix things?

Wealth disparity

So why have they remained on the books after the growing societal costs of car bloat became impossible to miss?

Wealth disparity

Federal leaders could do a world of good if they simply unwind the ill-advised policies already on the books.

Invalidate all the imaginary nonexistent wealth of the ultra-rich, redistribute the wealth and power of the nation more equally to create a strong middle class, and that will happen. Don't, and it won't. Ever. In all of recorded history. Our only choice at this point might be to stop using money itself...

Well hold on. That's the purpose of segregation, to justify paying some people less. You can say segregation is necessary because women are weaker than men, if you must. But as long as we have sports divided by sexes, misogynists will always be able to put their funds disproportionately towards male teams.
