Ugh, having issues with my Zigbee network after some updates. Not sure if issues with Zigbee2mqtt or issues with the coordinator.

Since ZHA has had such big advancements recently, I'm now getting tempted to migrate back, and maybe see if it does a bit better.

Well is a lost cause. No matter version I install, it refuses to communicate with my devices. It sometimes saw one, but it failed more than it succeeded.

But I finally managed to get to see the USB stick and complete the install. And now I’m setting up all my devices again but this time directly in hass.

I had different plans for today.

For remotes for light controls, do you use bindings, or automations to control the lights?

Seems like bindings is might be good idea because the remotes will still work if HomeAssistant/Zigbee2MQTT is down, but it seems you also lose some flexibility in terms of what action a button press takes?

So @StraToN is asking to establish the hashtag on mondays to share & projects they like with the world, and that's something I can totally get behind!

I'll start with breaking a lance for @FreeCAD.

I switched to it for all my CAD needs around three years ago now.
It took me the better part of a weekend going through some CAD challenges to wrap my head around most of the differences to what I used prior, and I haven't looked back since.

Another !

Today I want to celebrate which enables me to integrate a whole ton of zigbee based sensors into my home automation setup. Whenever I look into adding a new sensor these days, I first check whether it's supported by z2m already, and usually it is.

And things just work. That's one of the most important things when it comes to home automation - getting forced into tinkering because the light no longer will switch on is not something enjoyable ;)

Kennt jemand von euch eine gute Zigbee-Bridge mit Ethernet, die ZHA für Home Assistant kann?

The migration from to is complete!

I was skeptical at first, but Zigbee2MQTT is the superior platform. It was actually easier to set up than I expected it to be, so kudos to the programmers.

It was a lot of work just so I can fully support the new microwave presence sensor I just got, but boy is that thing slick! Definitely grabbing a few more of those!

So I tried Ser2net on the host and the add on for on the VM.
A lot of fiddling in the settings but succes.🤞

could someone, smarter than me, tell me why my Sonoff zigbee usb dongle is detected but will not work in a RaspberryPi USB3 port, but works fine in a USB2 port.

When plugged into USB3 port Zigbee2Mqtt sees it but will not find or connect to any zigbee devices or find any new devices. moving it to USB2 fixes it.

Im curious if its the dongle, the RPi, something with USB3, both? I dont have much hardware debugging experience to know where to look

Sonoff ZBDongle-E is quite capable Zigbee stick.

It has been working great as a router for few weeks, so I've decided to set it up as a coordinator, and migrate the whole network to it.

It seems to work reliably as a coordinator so far. Using it with Zigbee2MQTT in Home Assistant.

I wrote a mini review for it - https://kravemir.org/product-reviews/sonoff-zbdongle-e.

on is such a mess -- so many different options: ZHA, , and now I've discovered the -way!

The good thing is that you can cover different use cases, but OMG there must be soo much churn & duplication! I hope there are also synergies, like I learned from Z2M how to OTA "manually" via ZHA.

Next task: look around if anyone's made a chart comparing the different options.

I’ve bought some #Ikea #Vallhorn motion sensors for 8€ a piece.

Pairing to the #Zigbee network in Home Assistant and #Zigbee2MQTT was somehow difficult, which is not usual for Zigbee devices (at least according to my limited experiences with them). Nevertheless, I succeeded in pairing them.

Unsuccessful attempts

Firstly I tried to pair the sensor with ‘Permit All’ for several times. Pairing failed. I noticed the sensor wanted to connect to my #Aqara smart plug (SP-EUC01), not to the #Sonoff Zigbee stick (the coordinator). Somehow Aqara didn’t like it and rejected the initial Zigbee ‘interview’.

zigbee2mqtt error message - couldn't pairSuccessful attempt

After some tries finally the following method for pairing worked:

  1. Zigbee2MQTT: Permit Coordinator (forcing to join the Sonoff Zigbee Stick).
  2. Pressed the link button shortly 4 times (in 5 seconds). The red diode started to blink (fading) fast and then slowly.
  3. Placed the sensor a few (2) cm near the coordinator.

Ikea Vallhorn motion sensor and Sonoff Zigbee coordinatorThe initial step (‘zigbee dialogue’) was completed successfully this time and I was able to add them to the dashboards, automations etc.

Overall, the design of the sensor looks nice and smooth. On the backside, it has 3 buttons:

  1. Link – for pairing
  2. Timer (1 – 5) – probably to notify connected lights when to turn off (after 1 or 5 minutes). Not sure if this function works or even makes sense in Home Assistant.
  3. Light mode – to notify connected lights when to turn on/off (always, only at night). Again, this function is probably useful if you have an Ikea gateway and lights and not in the Home Assistant

Ikea Vallhorn with holderThe package also includes a holder and a piece of double-sided tape. The manual doesn’t include much information.

Automations

Why I bought this motion sensor at all? The initial idea was to turn on the Home Assistant dashboard (FireHD tablet) when someone approaches the fridge with the tablet attached.

The automation is simple:

If a motion is detected, then send a notification (‘command_screen_on’) to the tablet (running the #HomeAssistant companion app):

Home Assistant automation - turning on the screenThe automation works ok-ish.

Motion sensor log in Home AssistantIt detects motion and turns on the tablet, but the tablet screen turns off after a minute. I’ve noticed the sensor doesn’t send triggers every time it detects motion, only at the beginning of the motion and after the state is cleared (no motion detected). The states are:

Detected -> Cleared -> Detected -> Cleared … and so on

The effect: if someone is dancing in front of the sensor for several minutes, it will trigger only one time. Meanwhile, the associated automation will not be triggered again.

What I want (from the state perspective) is:

Detected -> Detected -> Detected -> …. Cleared -> Detected ….

I could prolong the screen on time, but that is not the best solution. I have to think about how to solve this issue. Maybe other types of motion sensors behave the way I want?

Ideas for other 2 motion sensors

Ok, this was the first motion sensor I put in use.

The second sensor I’ve put in my workshop to detect motion. I’d like to build a simple home alarm system. A few days ago I thought I heard someone opening doors and walking in my workshop. When I checked, nobody was there, but the unpleasant feeling stayed. So the purpose of the second sensor is to prove if I’m hallucinating and hearing voices or not 🙂

For the 3rd one, I don’t have an idea yet where to put it.

I love it works with rechargeable 2xAAA NiMH batteries, and seems to last quite long (battery life testing in progress).

Works nicely in HomeAssistant via Zigbee2MQTT.

I think today is a good day to move from to . 😅

40 devices are in my network, so this will probably take some time. But I don't have to work today and my wife is in the office so this is probably the only day in the next week this will be possible.

It's just annoying how slow the development and device compatibility of ZHA progresses. It was good for a quick start back then but as my network grows the limitations become more visible.

Wish me luck. 😅

Ok, I give up. "Error: Failed to connect to the adapter (Error: SRSP - SYS - ping after 6000ms)"

Tried pretty much everything except the pretty useless "USE ANOTHER DONGLE". My Sonoff dongle is compatible and it works like a charm with ZHA.

I sadly have no time to try more as the migration, even if Z2M would work instantly now, would cost so much time and I don't have this anymore because of the troubleshooting.

Sad. I heard many good things about Z2M and really wanted to try it. Now one of my free days has lost some hours with no success and I'm mad, why good things in still have to be so complicated.

I just hope will get better over time. I don't think I have the option to try again for the next months.

I am running Aotect Zi-Stick (ZGA008), but I would probably go with Sonoff ZBDongle-E, which is based the same EFR32MG21 chip, but has external antenna.

I recommend to use because it's decoupled from home automation software:

  • ability to switch software in future without repairing all devices in different software,
  • no duplication of efforts to add device support in multiple softwares,
  • ability to run (or evaluate) different software in parallel against the same Zigbee network.
