Finally finished one battery life test for Nous E6.

The first one down to 1% of remaining battery, and with full history in HA.

This one was powered by weaker 550mAh eneloop lite AAA batteries.

It lasted roughly 40 days.

Home Assistant 2024.2! 🥰

https://www.home-assistant.io/blog/2024/02/07/release-20242/

Improved drag 'n drop in automations, the proximity of persons, custom Assist responses, export your data, Zigbee firmware updates, Matter diagnostics and actions, icons everywhere, and much more!

@cassidy@blaede.family avatar

@homeassistant there's so much good stuff in this release! Most exciting to me:

• Tuya support without dealing with developer accounts
• Tapo device support
• Govee local control
• Zigbee updates

Incredible work from the community, as always.

Despite working in the electronics field, I never really got into stuff. But lately I have been trying out and was excited that a friend from Chicago Meetups, @kbx81, has been working at on the project.

https://theamphour.com/657-automating-the-home-with-keith-burzinski/

I spoke with Keith about how to get started as a beginner in the field, but then also how to put some custom electronics to work in a context. I was impressed with how fast I could add a device to my HA

FFS... My antenna was dangling between the data cabinet and some racking (i.e. around loads of metal). So I "tidied" it into the loft space above the data cabinet... ...and the link quality has gone down.

(But it seems to be working... Not sure how to interpret LQI - it was 66, now 53 and some Googling suggests anything under 100 is shit. The device and coordinator aren't far apart so no particular reason to think that it should be shit)

could someone, smarter than me, tell me why my Sonoff zigbee usb dongle is detected but will not work in a RaspberryPi USB3 port, but works fine in a USB2 port.

When plugged into USB3 port Zigbee2Mqtt sees it but will not find or connect to any zigbee devices or find any new devices. moving it to USB2 fixes it.

Im curious if its the dongle, the RPi, something with USB3, both? I dont have much hardware debugging experience to know where to look

I did an experiment - removing routers to test performance of Sonoff ZBDongle-E.

I kept only:

  • ZBDongle-E as a coordinator,
  • ZBDongle-E as a router,
  • Gledopto LED strip controller, because I use it.

Zigbee network has been rock solid stable in above setup with over 20 battery powered end devices for past few days

Aeotec Zi-Stick ZGA008 had a problem maintaining links in such setup - without adding extra routers.

@zigbee

Aeotec Zi-Stick ZGA008 as a coordinator with many battery powered devices. This coordinator needs more than just one extra dedicated router besides LED strip controller acting as a router. With less routers, battery powered devices are randomly losing link and start flying the map. Even if router without any links is removed, network becomes unstable.

Question to the folks: what recommendations do you have for one of those in-wall relays to turn a dumb light switch into smart?

I've heard good things about , but it's WiFi, which I'm trying to avoid because I don't want to overcrowd my network.

Keep an eye on this.... looks very promising.

Zigbee Home was just released. Its like ESPHome but for Zigbee. So you will be able to create your own custom devices and easily integrate them with . Its in the early days but very cool indeed.

We need a version of this too!

My wife says I have become drunk with Smart Home power. I say, “Okay but when you need toilet paper, you won’t have to yell!” 🤷

cassidy,
@cassidy@blaede.family avatar

When you hit the button, it broadcasts to the house that someone needs help in the upstairs bathroom. It has a genuine use, though: our toddler sometimes needs help in the potty, and this makes it so they don’t have to yell. Plus… Internet of Shit… it was too good to pass up.

IKEA had these on sale for like $6, and despite the meme, it’s actually handled entirely locally. Yay, and !
