'In his first newspaper interview since leaving the cabinet, the former chancellor says the ex-PM was the ‘most consequential leader since Thatcher’ — and reveals his own biggest mistake in the tax scandal that led to his sacking’
They just don't get it do they? Worth a read to get confirmation of the bat shit stupidity, arrogance and greed that drive them.
This hospital wasn’t deemed bad enough to be one of the 40 to be supposedly rebuilt under Johnson…it’s now had two ceilings collapse in critical care and radiology units. Patients weren’t hurt only due to swift actions of staff.
How horrific do things have to be in this country for people to say they deserve and need better?
Are you going to Granada fair? Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme... Crazy. Cost-of-living crisis and all, but bloody #parsley in the local CoOp is shipped in from Spain. Parsley! #uk#brokenbritain
Keir Starmer must adopt ‘war footing’ to tackle economy, says Gordon Brown
From The Times (paywall free link below)
I am glad to hear this. I am assuming that the war effort is going to include taxing people on the basis of their ability to pay, a crackdown on profiteers (maybe taking a few out and shooting them pour encourager les autres) and the application of the Treason laws?
“Just when you hoped you’d reached rock bottom, parliament finds a way of going still lower. Westminster bows to no one in its efforts to let you and the country down …Politicians who strive for dignity – who demand respect – prove themselves to be made of straw. Little men and women driven entirely by their own worst instincts.”
While people die in Gaza, the UK parliament goes to war over the ceasefire - John Crace | The Guardian
First the #Tories cut council budgets & demanded efficiency gains... so councils sought #charities that could offer services more cheaply (as they were partly funded by donations & over grants).... then local provision became more & more dependent on these groups stretching their budgets.
Now further council budget cuts & declining fundraising from elsewhere (during the crisis of #enforcedpoverty) leave these charities teetering on the edge of failure.
“There are no savings from austerity and privatisation, just a wholesale shifting of costs. The rich pay less tax and the public service companies in which they own shares make greater profits. The rest of us pick up the bill.”
"At the top, there is talk of “more effective services” and “the right level of support”, but what any such moves are likely to result in is obvious: more kids stuck at home and families locked into despair, as politicians and their allies carry on blaming deep policy failures on – no, really – the parents of vulnerable and disabled children."
Just a reminder: neither Tony Bair nor Gordon Brown had a Resignation Honours List. Liz Truss was PM for seven weeks, most of which time politics was shut down in mourning for the Queen, the remaining time was put to wrecking the economy.
It's a little ironic to see the chief of Vote Leave which spent all that time bloviating against "unelected EU bureaucrats" being nominated to become an unelected legislator.
I’m thinking for those who don’t live in the UK or follow UK politics closely, the idea that a government would conduct its COVID response and much official government business using private WhatsApp chat rooms is a really strange concept to get one’s head around. Especially when there’s an enquiry and… Oops! I somehow deleted my WhatsApp messages. #BrokenBritain
A very sad story. He had the means and will to leave voluntarily but they locked him up for months anyway, at taxpayer cost. The system is so broken they’d rather let people die than go home. All someone had to do was walk him to a departure gate and wave him off.
I ate dinner at a local restaurant last night. The owner said they were closing because of #Brexit. Can't get staff, food imports too difficult, electricity costs soaring higher than they did in EU.
There was more -- and in a way more disturbing. She is a Pole with British citizenship who has been here for 30 years. Since Brexit, she says she has experienced a lot of abuse. She never did before. #sad#Brexitbollocks#brokenbritain#crumblingbritain
