Congrats to Aleph Farms for being the 3rd company to receive regulatory approval for

Key things to know:

  • 1st approval in Israel
  • 1st for cultivated beef
  • 1st entirely animal-free process (no serum)

My favorite sci-fi passage on this (from Frederick Pohl's The Space Merchants) -- where in the future, people eat pieces of a giant piece of cultivated meat called "Chicken Little". Washed down with something called "Coffiest".

Will ever make it onto supermarket shelves?
"2/5 Americans claim to restrict their meat consumption on environmental grounds .. the cost of is still around 5X tt of its farm-grown counterpart. Firms are trying to get tt number down. Amy Chen, COO at Upside Foods, says tt her firm has found cells tt don't need external growth factors, cutting costs significantly"

Cultivated meat is a ‘promising’ space food for astronauts, ESA says.

Development of cultivated meat, i.e. actual animal meat that’s grown in bioreactors from stem cells, has been gaining traction in recent years.

Over the past year, the European Space Agency (ESA) has been exploring whether cultivated meat can be a viable food option in space, used as a protein source that can be produced in situ.

I welcome an age of cultivated meats as it would solve a lot of the issues with the livestock industry. The amount of water, feed, waste, would drastically be reduced! Animal Welfare would be improved by scaling back the meat and dairy industry. I don't eat as much meat these days because these concerns float in the back of my mind.

the study found that over the last 20 years (from 2000 to 2019), food-related greenhouse gas emissions increased by 14 percent.

Researchers found that increased consumption of animal-derived foods was responsible for 95 percent of these increased emissions, with beef and dairy accounting for 32 percent and 46 percent, respectively
