On this day 30 years ago, the music world lost legendary guitarist and prominent #DavidBowie sidekick #MickRonson.
"Ziggy played guitar
Jamming good with Weird and Gilly
And the Spiders from Mars
He played it left hand
But made it too far
Became the special man
Then we were Ziggy's band"
The dark racist past of some of Britain's rock icons.
In 1976 Eric Clapton said in a concert: "“Stop Britain from becoming a black colony. Get the foreigners out,” exclaimed Clapton to his captive audience. “Get the w*gs out. Get the c**ns out. Keep Britain white...” 1/2
In the same year David Bowie said “I believe Britain could benefit from a fascist leader” and declared that Adolf Hitler “was one of the first rock stars”. 2/2
🎧 In October 1972, about the time of #DavidBowie's shows at The Winterland, #MickRock made this promo film of "Jean Genie" starring the "Aladdin Sane"-era band, Bowie, and friend Cyrinda Foxe. She's dancing on the sidewalk in front of the Mars Hotel at 4th and Howard.
The clip cost $350 to shoot/edit, about $2500 in 2023. Bowie made it for play on BBC programs when the album was released the next year, 1973.
I'm starting 2023 by posting #MyRecordCollection , adding to this thread one each day. These are the albums that made me who I am (for better or worse). That should last most of the year! I'm also updating the art, using techniques I've learned and developed since I began this series in 2009.
I have so many 'favourite' Bowie songs it's impossible to come up with any order to them, it changes depending on mood and day. His art took him down so many paths. Love this bassline and the little swirls of synth, industrial, EDM falvours under the rock.
