#art#history: he's one of my favourite people (along with my parge, who introduced me to his music), so i am compelled to draw duke ellington whenever the anniversary of his birth (#otd in 1899) pops up.
duke was full of wisdom, music, mystery & optimism. both of his parents were pianists, so he was naturally drawn to the instrument. his mum & dad did more than refine young edward's ear, though. [THREAD] #dukeEllington#jazz#illustration#music
I moved my turntable from my digital AV receiver to a 70s Pioneer amp that was collecting dust in my wife's grandma's closet, connected to a pair of 80s JBL cabinet speakers from my dad (woofers refoamed 20 years ago). The amp is powerful and sounds great, except the right speaker channel is gritty (bad capacitor?), so until I get it serviced, I guess I'll be listening to #mono records. #VintageAudio#VintageHiFi@vinylrecords
@vinylrecords#NowPlaying DUKE ELLINGTON - MASTERPIECES BY ELLINGTON in uncut concert arrangements (Columbia, 1956 reissue). Originally released in 1951, one of the first 12-inch LPs to take advantage of the extended play time with long-form arrangements. Masterpieces indeed. #DukeEllington#jazz#vinyl#mono
Take the ”A” Train soi taustalla, taiteilen
sohvanpartaalla pienen koiran vieressä, läppärini ääressä,
toivon saavani idean, ihan minkä tahansa, jota
toteuttaisin hetken ja sitten hylkäisin
Diminuendo in Blue and Crescendo in Blue - Duke Ellington Orchestra with Paul Gonsalves solo, Newport Festival, 1956. (Assembled footage) (m.youtube.com)
I love swing... but for me it is always eternally leading up to that midsummer midnight moment in 1956 when Paul Gonsalves' tenor sax takes flight....
