I’ve been having a great time with my new @frameworkcomputer laptop. The flexibility is really unique. First I got to build the laptop myself with parts, and now I get it to be what I want it to be with regards to input and ports and such. I’ll probably swap out the screen bezel for a bolder color, though. The purple is not very purple. Worth the 6 month wait!

it was time for a new laptop so i went for the (with i7-1370p) this time

installed @chimera_linux obviously and everything works out of the box with minimal setup needed

could use more module bays and perhaps a higher resolution display (otoh the default one has a nice aspect ratio, surprisingly decent contrast and can be used without scaling, but it's also a little slow) but otherwise seems neat (i particularly like it's entirely immune to usb-c wearing out)

I'll probably buy a Framework 13 very soon. On their website there is information on Linux compatibility, stating that some components are not yet officially supported on Arch Linux.

Does anyone have experience with an Arch-based system on the laptop? Should I get AMD rather than Intel, or the other way around? Anything else to keep in mind?

It seems like the AMD Framework laptops have some pretty serious USB issues.

I hope @frameworkcomputer can get this sorted, mine pretty much has to go back in the drawer for a while until either firmware updates or future hardware revisions are available.

I hope this can be resolved. I really do want Framework and companies like them to succeed.

I may have to grab an Intel-based Dell for a while so that I have something reliable when away from home.

Algun consell? Els Lenovo ThinkPad m'agraden molt, però no sé quin model agafar, i tampoc on comprar-ho. #ajuda

Bàsicament, el que vull és màxima compatibilitat amb Linux, connectors, i una "bona" bateria! La mida no importa gaire.

This is Cyberpunk 2077 medium settings, custom because motion blur is off. On a laptop. Visual quality is a little to be desired due to resolution scaling, but running on a laptop?! WTF?

tripplehelix, to random

Ok what?! The AMD 7840U can run Dakar Desert Rally on high settings very comfortably?!?! Now I'm wondering if it'd be able to handle Cyberpunk 2077.

My Nvidia 1080 in my computer is looking very old.

If you want support with you can uninstall lightdm-gtk-greeter and instead install slick-greeter which is an alternate front end to LightDM. You can get GUI settings with lightdm-settings, but the settings file is super simple to use.

As long as sudo uses your fingerprint, this will too.

OK, the AMD laptop needs the testing firmware from fwupd for fprintd to work, at least on Debian Sid. Now I can use my fingerprint to authenticate with sudo! Got to now figure out how to get LightDM to use it.

Then I've got to go get my finger cut off!

I should really do a three month review on the Framework 13 AMD version in a video/TTS format. So far, it's a good laptop, although the trackpads and the speakers on it are not that great, but everything else is. It helped me set up the servers via IPMI as they don't quite work on macOS and need to use Windows.

While it cost more than a regular consumer laptop, the fact you can replace the mainboard to upgrade your laptop and keep the same laptop chassis is nice. You can also replace parts if they break too.

If you do get one, I recommend replacing the AMD Wifi card by Mediatek with an Intel AX210. The Mediatek Wifi cards are complete garbage and I don't know why AMD would choose them. They have very poor drivers and performance.

Just reinstalled on my Framework 13 and thought I followed the appropriate instructions to get the fingerprint reader working. Turns out no.

Ultimately found this script which got things going perfectly. https://community.frame.work/t/pop-os-script-to-enable-fingerprint/11666

@Foxboron would you say sbctl and any other bits are ready & stable? Is it as easy as turning on secure boot on my laptop, do some thing in firmware, and set up some pacman hooks? (Getting me secure boot with no conscious maintenance and low/zero risk of an upgrade not being able to reboot.)

If so, is there a tutorial you know (or had written 😅) that guides someone through the setup?

Joyful discovery of the day: Provided one knows what the components (SSD, RAM sticks, etc.) feel like, it is in fact quite possible to service a @frameworkcomputer laptop independently as a person using the guides provided by . If not sure what these components feel like, visual interpretation from a trained @AiraVI agent can be useful. @mastoblind
