DDS was developed by #HP and #Sony at the end of the 1980s, based on the DAT format. It was primarily used for backup storage.
The DG90P pictured here is a DDS-1 tape that can store 1.3GB (up to 2GB compressed). In 1990, the usual hard drive capacity in a personal computer was less than 100 MB.
If you didn't know, #HPUX also comes with this pretty nifty tool called Ignite-UX. Although not included in the default "Core OS" installation, it can easily be added from the Application Software CD-ROM.
Ignite-UX can create a bootable recovery media that integrate the entire HP-UX installer. It's like creating a new installation media, but with the content of your already configured system.
In the late 1990s, after running #Merck’s public web sites for several years on their Research Labs’ favored MIPS-based #SGI#IRIX machines, I had to help transition that responsibility to corporate IT and their favored #HP PA-RISC #HPUX servers.
Along the way I had to explain that no, #Apache httpd was not “shareware.”
Whenever I see comments like this about #Wayland I always have to ask, who do you think would be developing this new protocol? Every single #Linux graphics developers agrees that Wayland is where we're going, the problem is nobody agrees on how it should look
@rdfhrn@BrodieOnLinux#HPUX and #Solaris are rounding errors AFAICT both are only on life support due to existing contracts and not because #HPE or #Oracle actually want to improve them.
That being said I've seen Solaris & HP-UX in #CriticalInfrastructure (sadly can't say where due to NDAs!) but not as a #Desktop, so I'm pretty shure they don't even have #Xorg installed at all...
Tube time! It’s getting late, but I want to quickly boot the C200, and since I don’t have a compatible monitor here, I use the IBM 3161 ASCII Display Station as console.
The C200 works nicely (and loudly), as does the 3161. The 3161 was manufactured in 1987, so it great that the CRT still hasn’t developed any problems yet. There seems to be a bit of jitter once in a while, which I hadn’t noticed the last time, but otherwise the image is rock solid. #PARISC#HPUX#IBM3161#Retrocomputing
@eschaton It’s running 10.20, too. I see that I’ve got 11.00 installation CDs. Not sure why I didn’t upgrade at the time, as the B1000 provided by my employer very likely ran 11. But I seem to remember that 11.00 was quite buggy, so maybe I wanted to wait for 11.10 or so. #HPUX
Used the occasion to finally check on the computers in storage at my parents’ house, notably the HP 9000 715/50, the HP 9000 C200, and the PowerMac 7300/200. I was quite worried about leaking batteries and capacitors, but these ain’t home computers, and I’m always amazed by the build quality and the attention to detail. #PARISC#HPUX#PowerMac#Retrocomputing
I was particularly worried about the 715’s power supply, as it doesn’t work. So something’s certainly broken, but I don’t see anything obviously wrong about it. In any case, I discovered that it’s even easier to open than I expected. #PARISC#HPUX#Retrocomputing
I just reassembled it and briefly plugged it in. There’s a high-pitched sound coming from the primary (left) side of the PSU and no output. Any quick guesses what the issue might be?
I don’t have the time to investigate further for now, but if the issue is indeed on the primary side only, this may actually be good news. #PARISC#HPUX#Retrocomputing
Does anyone have install media for HP-UX UNIX for M68k, version 9 or below?
My friend @RetroHoosk is looking for it. Please ping them!
Boosts appreciated :)

We desperately need a web browser by an independent organisation funded by EU taxpayer money and maintained for the common good.
