Today March 31st is #WorldBackupDay... But not only!

DDS was developed by #HP and #Sony at the end of the 1980s, based on the DAT format. It was primarily used for backup storage.

The DG90P pictured here is a DDS-1 tape that can store 1.3GB (up to 2GB compressed). In 1990, the usual hard drive capacity in a personal computer was less than 100 MB.

If you didn't know, #HPUX also comes with this pretty nifty tool called Ignite-UX. Although not included in the default "Core OS" installation, it can easily be added from the Application Software CD-ROM.

Ignite-UX can create a bootable recovery media that integrate the entire HP-UX installer. It's like creating a new installation media, but with the content of your already configured system.

Fantastic for disaster recovery!

Boot menu of the HP 715 firmware showing that the tape currently in the tape drive does contain an ISL (Initial System Loader).
The Ignite-UX installer successfully started from the tape and showing it's initial menu on screen. From there, the whole install process can be customized. It can be used to re-image the same station after a disk crash, or to clone it on similar hardware. Partitions (LVM volumes, actually) can also be adjusted to better suit a different disk drive, if needed.

Is HP-UX still alive?

In a nostalgic mood, so I'm curious how people in other computing environments pronounced HP/UX.

@mjgardner@social.sdf.org avatar

@jacobydave I pronounce HP-UX as “aitch-pukes.”

In the late 1990s, after running #Merck’s public web sites for several years on their Research Labs’ favored MIPS-based #SGI #IRIX machines, I had to help transition that responsibility to corporate IT and their favored #HP PA-RISC #HPUX servers.

Along the way I had to explain that no, #Apache httpd was not “shareware.”

Whenever I see comments like this about I always have to ask, who do you think would be developing this new protocol? Every single graphics developers agrees that Wayland is where we're going, the problem is nobody agrees on how it should look

kkarhan,

@rdfhrn @BrodieOnLinux and are rounding errors AFAICT both are only on life support due to existing contracts and not because or actually want to improve them.

That being said I've seen Solaris & HP-UX in (sadly can't say where due to NDAs!) but not as a , so I'm pretty shure they don't even have installed at all...

Tube time! It’s getting late, but I want to quickly boot the C200, and since I don’t have a compatible monitor here, I use the IBM 3161 ASCII Display Station as console.

@mxp@mastodon.acm.org avatar

The C200 works nicely (and loudly), as does the 3161. The 3161 was manufactured in 1987, so it great that the CRT still hasn’t developed any problems yet. There seems to be a bit of jitter once in a while, which I hadn’t noticed the last time, but otherwise the image is rock solid.

I bought the C200 used in 2002 or so, but when it came out in 1997, the base model set you back DEM 30,242 or CHF 24,356.

@eschaton It’s running 10.20, too. I see that I’ve got 11.00 installation CDs. Not sure why I didn’t upgrade at the time, as the B1000 provided by my employer very likely ran 11. But I seem to remember that 11.00 was quite buggy, so maybe I wanted to wait for 11.10 or so.

Used the occasion to finally check on the computers in storage at my parents’ house, notably the HP 9000 715/50, the HP 9000 C200, and the PowerMac 7300/200. I was quite worried about leaking batteries and capacitors, but these ain’t home computers, and I’m always amazed by the build quality and the attention to detail.

mxp,
@mxp@mastodon.acm.org avatar

I was particularly worried about the 715’s power supply, as it doesn’t work. So something’s certainly broken, but I don’t see anything obviously wrong about it. In any case, I discovered that it’s even easier to open than I expected.

mxp,
@mxp@mastodon.acm.org avatar

I just reassembled it and briefly plugged it in. There’s a high-pitched sound coming from the primary (left) side of the PSU and no output. Any quick guesses what the issue might be?

I don’t have the time to investigate further for now, but if the issue is indeed on the primary side only, this may actually be good news.

Does anyone have install media for HP-UX UNIX for M68k, version 9 or below?
My friend @RetroHoosk is looking for it. Please ping them!
Boosts appreciated :)

State of the Web, circa 2023:

“Would you like to use the browser by Company X, or the browser by the company that survives on half-a-billion dollars a year from Company X, or the browser by the company that gets paid an estimated $20 billion a year by Company X even though it can survive without it?”

We desperately need a web browser by an independent organisation funded by EU taxpayer money and maintained for the common good.

I'm just gald that #hp stuff works with everything out of the box - including even ancient and latest #Linux distros...

The only machines with better compatibility are #NeedlePrinters and #Xerox #WorkCentre Laser machinces, cuz those even come with #MSDOS, #OS2 and #Unix drivers for obscure stuff like #Solaris 7.x #HPUX and #AUX...
