Got a Miyoo Mini+ a few days ago and I'm absolutely in love with this thing 😄

It's a pure nostalgia machine.
Has all the games I used to play as a kid on it and you don't even have to swap around cartridges anymore :awesome:

Received a Miyoo Mini Plus for my birthday a few weeks ago and I've been tuning it to perfection since then.

The fact is that I spend more time faffing about with these kinds of emulation devices than I do playing them.

I installed the preferred OS, OnionOS, refined the list of games to my Best Of, tuned my favourites list and am now scraping artwork for the selection menu.

There's still a bit more to do until it's in optimal running order but it's been fun and distracting getting it this far.

@zorrobandito what's the game in the pic?

It's clear to me now that owning just a single is not realistic. It's more sensible to own ALL of them.

But how do you seamlessly move between them, keeping your saves and states?

Enter "Syncthing": https://syncthing.net/

Syncthing is available just about everywhere and keeps folders in sync between devices. I've just spent a few days getting this configured on my devices and it works (mostly) great!

Read on for some tips...

Not your typical use of the , but I spent so much time playing LMA Manager 2002 when I was younger.

I remember a single save took up all 15 blocks on a PS1 memory card. 😂

Now I just need a little USB hub for some on-the-go 🤓

@Liquidream @gwoptics I wouldn't say WiFi is essential for using Splore, but rather it's essential if you want to access the BBS and its online carts. If you don't have the Plus you can still use Splore to play the games you've manually put on the SD card. Yes, it's fantastic having the NATIVE Pico-8 on the Miyoo Mini!

Liquidream,
@Liquidream@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@CaptManiac @gwoptics Fair point. I should've said something like "in order to make the most of Splore", as otherwise all the main internet-connected benefits (which I consider it's best feature) will be unavailable.

isn't going to replace as my most favorite game ever.

much too slow story - enemies don't feel dangerous, story sounds okay but develops too slow

I don't even feel like like the different combat is nearly the worst problem - would have expected that (love tripple-tech, hate real time combat like zelda)

davetansley, to retroid

My first hours with the Pocket 2S reminded me how easy setting up a was... Starting from scratch, having to install standalone emulators, doing far more config than any sane human should have to do...

But I finally got there, and ended up withwhat seems like a really nice device. Comfortable to hold, really excellent sticks and triggers, it runs everything up to and really well, and even a few games.

Now to actually play something...

@davetansley one of the reasons I prefer the Anbernic 353M over the Retroids, although I use my Pocket 3+ for quite a few things (OutRun 2; Android).

I got a Miyoo Mini+ and I’m looking for game recommendations:

  • PICO-8
  • TIC-80
  • Homebrew NES, SNES, GB, GBC and/or GBA games (including GB Studio)
  • Worthwhile romhacks
  • Anything else??

Achie7240,
@Achie7240@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@nylekyland Guncho, Canyon Crisis, Birds With Guns, Beckon The Hellspawn, PicoKaiju, Charge! I absolutley love, but not sure what can run on the mini+ due to fake8 :\

I run a game review series called PicoShorts, maybe those worth a shot to test! https://github.com/Achie72/kofi-articles#picoshorts.

Another + is @nerdyteachers with his Pico-View PICO-8 zine, with reviewed games from the last month's releases! https://nerdyteachers.com/PICO-8/Pico-View/

And @rasterweb runs a Fake-8 compatibility test over at: https://2xlnetworks.notion.site/Anbernic-RG35XX-PICO-8-2430eb0ba0474dd595dcac8cef044b25 IIRC

@rasterweb @FiveElementNinja Welll do I??? 🤓 PicoKaiju, Air Delivery, Beckon the Hellspawn, Buns: Bunny survivor, Witchraft TD, Charge!, Kumatori panic and Guncho for sure! I also do a review series for PICO-8 games called PicoShorts!

https://github.com/Achie72/kofi-articles#picoshorts

And of course, Pico-View tries to feature newly released games, where I co-author feature reviews and help with others for random reviews! Directed by NerdyTeachers and @marinamakes!

Second game complete is Circle of the Moon.

I'd made the mistake of playing Aria of Sorrow (the best CV game) first, so was reluctant to go back to this. I remember getting it on GBA launch day and it being unplayable due to the screen. Shame, because it's pretty good. Kind of halfway between old CV games and SOTN CV games.

It's main weakness is how much grinding is needed for levels and cards. But I found myself really enjoying the bosses.

davetansley, to gaming

I had a think about my post yesterday on choice paralysis, and decided to apply a new approach to managing games on my .

I started by deleting everything. Then applied three rules for game inclusion:

  1. No PS1 or Arcade - there's a place for big, brash coin-op games, and a 3 inch screen isn't it.
  2. Games I once owned - for that sweet nostalgia hit.
  3. Games that I know I want to play.

This ended up being about 10 games per platform. Much more manageable!

wiredfire,
@wiredfire@mas.to avatar

Absolutely the way. Loading thousands in then spending hours making sure they all have box art that is just-so leads to a big “no what..?” moment.

As you say, keep it down to what you’re actually likely to play. I do much the same on the Retroid Pocket 3, with the happy bonus that I can use it’s browser quickly grab the odd extra game on-the-go should the desire strike!

I’ve allowed myself PS1 though - need that Street Fighter Alpha 3 fix 😜

purduecoz,

@davetansley I found myself reading this and remembering undertaking the same effort for the same reasons about a year ago. Almost the same set of rules too. I find myself enjoying immensely now - and I actually play the games too!
