The U of T encampment just held a press conference and eloquently told them to piss off, and legally they are in the right because in Ontario Doug Ford made free speech on campus a government issue so YES folks! The Charter applies: #StudentProtests#Toronto

"The courageous stance of students across the country in defiance of genocide is accompanied by a near total blackout of their voices. Their words are the ones we most need to hear.
"The genocide has awakened a sleeping giant. Let us pray the giant prevails."

I’ve never been accused of having a way with words. I have always been more drawn to math, hence economist.
That said, I gave a speech today asking our administration to drop charges related to the #StudentProtests that I am quite proud of.
I am sharing it here for anyone who would like to hear my perspective as a member of the faculty who has witnessed and been arrested alongside students at one of these protests you have heard so much about.
If anyone is in the Denver area tomorrow (Wednesday 5/22) and is interested in helping push the administration to drop charges against student protesters, I am speaking at a faculty press conference at noon and we would love the support!

Peter Beinart offers valuable analysis of the current student protest movement and how it illustrates "the way in which one protest movement feeds into another at a time of broader protest." The Civil Rights and anti-war demonstrations of the 1960s fed the subsequent activism for LGBTQ and women's rights. And the backdrop to the current campus protests is the BLM movement and its protests.
