I’ve been reading about “stimming in autism”, which up until now was very confusing to me mostly because that’s the one point kept being repeated in the community being a must for an autistic individual. And I can’t relate to that at all.
Then I came across something that describes the purpose of ‘stimming’ is to deal with extra energy. Then it kinda hit me, I’ve never had the need to stim because I’m a low energy person in general.
I get overwhelmed with activities when they involve raising heart rates (yes, THAT too). I like quiet things, dead of night etc. Once at a time in my life, I was pretty sure I could hear flow of electricity.
So my question to the #ActuallyAutistic community: do you think stimming is a must for autistic people? Do you relate to it? Anyone know of any low energy stimming that gets overlooked?
@farah
I don't think I really stim unless I'm really distressed or in pain, which I think is also reasonably common for allistic people in any case?
I don't know whether lack of energy is a factor in that, my chronic illness means I feel best when I'm staying as still as possible, any kind of movement/exertion is first evaluated to see if the benefit is worth the energy outlay, so I don't really do subconscious movements much I think. @actuallyautistic
> Thousands of patients caught COVID in Victorian public hospitals in the past two years and hundreds died, fuelling concerns that health services aren't taking strong enough precautions against airborne viruses.
If you criticize me for going out to empty places sitting by open windows with my CO2 monitor showing safe air during the lowest point of #COVID19 infections in eight months, I'm happy to block you. The vast majority of people are simply completely ignoring COVID-19. I'm not. But I think people have a right to make informed decisions to minimize risk while living life. If you accept the risk of driving in a car, don't bash others for making informed decisions to enjoy life. Life is balance.
@Methylcobalamin
Exactly that, yes - in a well ventilated space, the CO2 will be lower due to a good inflow of outdoors air, while in poorly ventilated & crowded spaces the CO2 climbs very quickly. It can actually be quite startling when you start taking a CO2 monitor around to different places. @augieray
Anyone know of non-HP fandoms that have similar fic tropes to things like potions accidents, the whole mind-reading thing, & just the interesting options provided by magic generally?
I miss some of my favourite fics & tropes from the olden days, but I don't want to go back there :/
@MsHearthWitch
I feel like I ask this on social media every 6 months or so, but I've never found anything that scratches the same itches 😭
Although Star Wars comes closest, with the whole force bond situation.
@MsHearthWitch
Ooh I haven't, I'll check it out, thanks!!
There are tons of books where I like the actual canon content infinitely more, but just.. there's not the same breadth of options in the fanfic world, so many different characters etc.
The meerkat mask mandate you didn’t know about. By Mandy Squires
"Both Melbourne and Werribee zoos have strict mask rules in place to protect the curious creatures from catching COVID from members of the public during “meerkat experience” sessions."
My town lets you request street trees be planted anywhere you can keep an eye on them and water if needed. I am responsible for four trees on my block, and just requested three more. It's great to know that I'm literally throwing shade.
@danielpunkass
That's so cool! I left a note in some neighbours' letterboxes letting them know that street trees are free and what the benefits are, and the lady down the road showed up to give me a lecture on why she doesn't like trees 🥲
@danielpunkass
She'd had a bad experience because there were some unsuitable trees on her verge when she bought the block & she incurred a lot of costs etc, and unfortunately she wasn't willing to talk to the council about more suitable options :(
Have to spend 30 min longer in my doctor's waiting room because he left for an urgency. Fortunately, we have smartphones today. Since the pandemic, there's no more reading material and I forgot to take a small car with me. 😄
@NatureMC
Haha, this gave me an intense flashback to the stage in my life where I always had a little car in my pocket or my handbag/nappy bag, just in case 😁
Hmmm the exact same Zyrtec tablets my youngest takes for his mast cell flare ups now says 12+ only on the new packets, instead of also half a tablet for ages 6-12.
Now I apparently need to get the chewable children's Clarantyne, which includes (unlisted) colours and flavours, increasing the chances that a non-active ingredient will trigger a mast cell problem! 🤦🏼♀️
Unless I just keep buying the Zyrtec 🤔
@luciedigitalni
Ahh! I'm being lazy (or perhaps just efficient!) and only checking the options available at my supermarket, I expect there's a lot of other options at the chemist 😅
@samhainnight
So important that we have stories and articles etc from those who remember - so many people (including me) either weren't born or were too young to be aware of what was happening.
Not managing to fit my tVNS in on days the kids aren't at school. Think I'd better switch from a one hour block to half an hour in the morning & again in the arvo.
Yesterday I ignored all other housework to get 2 specific chores done, so today I have a mountain of washing up to catch up on 😔
T minus 8 days until dishwasher!!!
@MsHearthWitch
Oh goodness I'd definitely prefer to go without my dishwasher than my coffee machine! 😱
Do you have an alternate supply of coffee while you wait?
