Hey @ACM , I'm having some issues opening your SIGSPATIAL proceedings... evince, okular, foxit, even xournal refuse to open it, all look more or less like the image below (which is evince). Even tried a PDF->PDF conversion with ghostscript to see if that might fix the file, but that didn't work either (see second screenshot). Tried this on SIGSPATIAL '23 and '22 proceedings; the older issues don't offer single-file PDF proceedings it seems. Any idea?
It is with great regret that we mark the passing of programming language pioneer and A.M. Turing Laureate Niklaus Wirth, who passed away on Jan 1, 2024. Wirth created the Euler and PL360 languages. Working with Tony Hoare, Wirth used Euler as the basis of Algol-W which then became the basis for Pascal, which provided a foundation for future computer languages, systems, and architectural research for years to come. https://bit.ly/3jsDb6y
Does anyone know why I've been seeing all the images like this for a few days? It's not at all convenient to have to click on all the images to see them...
Fascinating as they are, AI assistants are not works of logic; they are works of words. They have become incredibly good at producing text that looks right. For many applications that is enough, not for programming though.
(Catching up on CACM) there is a great quote from this article that could not be more accurate:
"Recent years have been a period in which certain computer-related technologies are being relied upon, with relatively little reflection on their short-term and long-term effects".
This is why we must not just advance computing, but also the intersection of computing and society. There is a @ACM SIG that focuses on this too! @sigcas
@ACM please implement integrated translation on mastodon.acm.org. I really want to know what my colleagues are saying in all those languages I don't speak and copy-pasting text into a translator is too onerous.
Just sent my #interview with Alessio Antonini, General Chair of this year's @ACM#Hypertext Conference, to the editor of the @sigweb newsletter. Stay tuned! I'll let you know when it's published. @ht#acmht23
@ACM
I know it is still early, but have you guys decided on whether you are going to federate with #Threads when they turn it on? I have seen a number Masto hosts say they will not, but many of them are listing cost as the primary reason.
Ready for some social computing research with a beat you can dance to? 🪩I took this app rap from Mikey Angelo (mrgrandeofficial on TikTok) and mapped every app to a paper published in Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction as part of the Computer Supported Cooperative Work & Social Computing conference. NGL pretty proud of myself. :) And even more papers to come with #CSCW2023 in Minneapolis this October! cscw.acm.org @cscw@sigchi@ACM
