Really enjoying the pictures everyone is posting of the aurora. Even if it's too cloudy to see it here.

I do find myself wondering...

Who's read (or listened to the audio book) "Day of the triffids"?

It's quite funny watching Labour have fits over their leader inviting a Tory with some seriously odious ideas to defect to them. Mostly because I remember what Labour activists were like over the whole Phillip Lee defection to the LibDems, and how incandescent with rage @pluslibdems were.

@quixoticgeek The search term "paracord" is probably going to be useful for that search, rather than simply "shoelace"

I was driving around SF today and I saw a Tesla with an emoji license plate.
Now, the CA DMV isn't gonna let you do that, so how did they have an emoji license plate?
Simple! They put the codepoint!
The license plate was U-1F916.

Any suggestions?

Ireland beating Wales - and beating them well - was surprising but welcome. Going to be interesting seeing the Irish coming to England though.

Me: it's always a red flag if they start showing you pictures of their secret base inside an extinct volcano on a tropical island, and there are missile launchers and boiler-suited minions in mirrorshades in the background.

Especially if their selfies all feature a fluffy white cat and a control room with a map of the world labelled TARGET.

I see the UK government has made a "review" of trans healthcare that manages to not only recommend that trans healthcare should be worse, but also infantilises autistic people and marginalises their experience.

On one level I can see why the Baltimore Bridge accident is newsworthy.... the video is oddly compelling & lives were lost.

But, should an accident in Baltmore really be global news - leading on the evening news tonight (and on the top of the FT web-page with a full 'explainer')?

Its the usual case of if it happens in America its news....

Or perhaps wherever a container ship hit a bridge with good video it would be a lead time on the news... maybe not so much.

A_C_McGregor,
@A_C_McGregor@topspicy.social avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 @quixoticgeek It kind of is globally important, for a similar reason to how the Evergiven getting stuck in Suez was a big deal. Baltimore is a hell of a big port, and the knock-on effects on global trade will be huge.

US Politics in a nutshell:

The US forked British Monarchyโ„ข in 1776, but froze the dev branch with Constitution 1.0, so didn't bother to backport any of the subsequent bugfixes and security patches (1831, 1918, 1938, etc.) from the main British branch.

Anyway, you've got a bunch of British Monarchyโ„ข users who instinctively want to tug the forelock but don't have anyone to tug it at and it upsets them because homebrew is no goodโ€”it takes 700 years of inbreeding to roll your own nobility.

A_C_McGregor,
@A_C_McGregor@topspicy.social avatar

@cstross A friend of mine who has visited the US extensively once told me that he believed the fundamental issue with the US is that it's a very very conformist society with a founding myth of rebellion, and the tension between the two is the core cultural disconnect.

@KarlSchroeder @hendric @isaackuo @cstross @sudnadja @nyrath @FredKiesche if you're fighting at sufficiently large distances then manoeuvres regain importance because you have to factor lightspeed delay into your targeting. If a target is far enough away and can maneuver in such a way as to potentially be in places that are greater than the focus area of your weapon, then dodging and targeting becomes a matter of statistics.
