I'm a classically trained soprano. There was a time in my life when I used to pinch hit for choirs: directors would ask me if I could come in at the last minute to beef up their soprano section. I'd show up at maybe one rehearsal before the dress rehearsal, then the dress, then the concert. I nail my entrances & I know my music inside out. I could stand at the back and drive an entire section of sopranos through a program. It was like being a musical hired gun. It was incredibly fun.

That was an amazing period of my life and I miss it.

These days, my voice training, lung capacity, knowledge of my vocal apparatus, sense of pitch and musicality all get channeled towards narrating audiobooks.

Life can take some funny twists & turns. I never thought there'd be a time I wasn't singing in public. But transferrable skills are forever, and it's fascinating how past experiences can inform the present in new ways.

The problem with the archive feature on chat apps is I occasionally have to go into the archives for old conversations & there are others I don't want to delete but also don't want to see.

I need a "banish this from my sight" feature that sends them further than an archive. To some sort of dungeon, perhaps.

What I make a point to say to the children in my life: "When you grow up, you might marry a nice boy or girl or non-binary person. Or you might not get married at all. There are lots of good ways to make a life."

It's a small thing, but I want them to get that counterprogramming from the start & understand that I love & support them no matter what.

I've heard a lot of discussion around the question of, "when is the right time to disclose your disability?" In various settings.

As someone born with pretty obvious blind eyes, I've always found this question somewhat amusing and off the mark. It must be nice, I think, to get to choose.

On the other hand, I do consider it a sign that I have "done well" when I succesfully conceal my disabled status from others, and view it as a failure when it is emphasized.

Not sure what that says.

@objectinspace I think it's understandable to sometimes experience a feeling of "success" when passing for a non-marginalized or non-stigmatized person in a bigoted or oppressive culture.

Whatever that says, I think it might be saying it about the society you're in and not you as an individual.

So I said in response to Chris yesterday that it takes a surprisingly long time for people on the fediverse who are ostensibly into decentralization to really 'click' with the power of decentralization. Heres a perfect example.

Why should Mastodon be the next big thing? Mastodon has a very specific culture that a significant group of its users want, and does not lend itself well to scaling. The fediverse should be the next big thing. Just start building a new community on fedi with a different culture, and people who like that culture will come over and that community will grow.

Just let Mastodon have its own specific culture. It does not fit me personally super well either, but I have respect for the people who want it, and I want them to continue having that culture. They deserve that, and it should not be changed for the sake of growth. Let other software grow.

@laurenshof Thank you for this. The parts of Mastodon I like are what makes it Mastodon. I don't want it to be not-Mastodon in order to "compete" with centralized corporate social media.

Also, as a relatively new arrival, I don't presume to be in a position to dictate how Mastodon should be. I'm a grateful newcomer in an established culture: I want to learn how things work already, not remake Mastodon in my own image.
