I traveled around Central Florida quite a bit as a kid, I’ve never seen the Midwest style fireflies. I have seen a glowy luminescent bug in Florida though, it was like a glow stick green and had a constant light rather than a flash. Super weird looking.
Florida has tons of pools too, and I actually got swimming lessons in elementary school, we had mini field trips for a week walking to a community pool and teaching everyone to, at a minimum, float on their back and tread water.
And that $0.37 raise is on the high end for Target. The lowest is $0.10, and a certain percentage of employees have to get the lowest - so Target is literally nickel and dimeing some of their hardest workers.
My high school did a terrible job with teaching about it, I think it was mentioned briefly but with no real detail. I did go to high school in Florida, but I graduated in 2008 before things got really bad there.
I’m glad shaving hobbyists exist, y’all were a great help when I wanted to replace my Ross clearance safety razor, but I still don’t understand it as a hobby, lol.
I’m interested in automatically generating lengthy, coherent stories of 10,000+ words from a single prompt using an open source local large language model (LLM) on low-spec hardware like a laptop without GPU and with i5-8250U, 16GB DDR4-2400MHz. I came across the “Awesome-Story-Generation” repository which lists relevant...
I’ve won NaNoWriMo twice and I can confirm that writing your own does not necessarily result in a cool or coherent story. One of the two is likely better than an LLM could come up with, though.

The tankies occasionally use the term sinophobia, it was my understanding that the term meant “bigotry by condemning China’s government for being fucking evil”.
While I’ve never seen that on reddit (I wasn’t very active in global politics subs on there), I completely believe there’s people saying that sort of thing. And I apologize for making a comment that kinda denies that kind of bias exists -it wasn’t my intention but it definitely happened.
Lemmy is my first time encountering the term and, well, we’ve got a few apologists for the Chinese government around.
There was a picture going around during the pandemic of a religious leader performing a baptism with a super soaker. So, at least in some Christian denominations, that’s totally cool. And if Gatorade is okay…
Can you baptize people with a supersoaker full of piss?
This. And you don’t even necessarily realize you’re doing it, because I’m pretty sure it’s a coping mechanism in the face of how awful school shootings and mass shootings are - if it could happen in your community, you’d probably be a little bit more fearful just living your life.
I’m from Orlando. I’ve been to Pulse a few times, but I’d moved to Minnesota before the shooting. A friend of mine was supposed to go that night, but one of her friends was running late so the whole group decided to reschedule. I wasn’t close to anyone who died. But events like these feel different when it’s your community, when it’s places you’ve been, rather than just another horrifying tragedy playing out on the news.
“[Razer] falsely claimed, in the midst of a global pandemic, that their face mask was the equivalent of an N95 certified respirator,” Samuel Levine, director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, said in a statement....
Also they were rather expensive, even if they had done what they claimed to. They became more available about the same time you could get N95s easily. I’m the kind of weirdo who thinks an RGB face mask would be cool, but I didn’t want to spend $150 (iirc) on one.
EDIT: based on comments on the article, they were $99. Still more than I’d want to spend on something this silly, but not that unreasonable - if the mask did what it said it did.

I knew a black trans woman cop in Orlando almost fifteen years ago. She occasionally showed up at the trans support group meetings. I wasn’t really friends with her and we didn’t stay in touch after I moved so I have no idea what she’s up to now.
Funny enough, the support group was run by a trans woman who was a staunch Republican and the leopards kept eating her face even back then.
