Armavica

@Armavica@fosstodon.org

Hi! I have a background in physics and notions in theoretical computer science, but since my PhD I have mostly been doing computational biology.
What I like the most is scientific computing, and I usually do that in Rust or Python.

Outside of computer things, I like hiking, baking with sourdough and folding paper.

Born at 354 ppm.

Oh, this book looks very nice: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/717214/says-who-by-anne-curzan-phd/
Its description reminds me of what @tract_linguistes are doing for French

@napari (a @NumFOCUS sponsored project) is a package I didn't know I needed, but which I can't live without anymore.
Super useful to visualize N-dimensional microscopy images (x, y, z, t, channel, scene).
I use it as a standalone viewer to visualize microscope images, but also during debugging, napari.imshow(image_array) spawns the viewer and this is so much more convenient than matplotlib!
There seems to be a healthy ecosystem of plugins too :)

Man, this is a crazy rain system. It’s stalled right on top of us. My whole body is full of “fuck you.” Wow. The back, the knees, all the things.

I am lowering my expectations for accomplishments today!

But I pulled some pork tenderloin from the freezer and I’m making schnitzel soon, have roasted potatoes already, and braised some cabbage.

Figure German food makes good use of all my stuff I gotta use, and tastes good in a spring rain.

I’ll post a pic later.

@snarkysteff Mmmh, they look so good! It's been raining all day long here too, but I am baking bread so I should be ok tomorrow regardless of the sky :)

Armavica,
@Armavica@fosstodon.org avatar

@snarkysteff Seeing your post and others, I am increasingly interested in an air fryer, which looks like the small and convenient version of a convection oven for this kind of roast. I am sure it must also be more energy-efficient than firing the whole oven?

Armavica,
@Armavica@fosstodon.org avatar

@snarkysteff And have you ever tried to bake something in your air fryer? Do you know if it's something that people may do?

I would have never guessed that SciPy has graph algorithms but the scipy.sparse.csgraph module is full of them (connected components, Dijkstra, max flow, etc.): https://docs.scipy.org/doc/scipy/reference/sparse.csgraph.html#module-scipy.sparse.csgraph

I have always wondered if computers would still beat humanity at chess if they had to run on 20 Watts (that's what the brain consumes). It seems a fairer playing ground than sitting across a TPU array. How many Raspberry Pis does Stockfish need to beat Magnus Carlsen?

Unpopular opinion: Jupyter notebooks are not reproducible.

I shouldn't have to guess in what order you executed your 27 cells, and reconstruct what was in the four cells that you accidentally deleted but that were defining necessary variables, in order to reproduce your simulations and figures.

Notebooks might be fine for initial data exploration, but shouldn't even be saved imo. If you plot figures with python figure1.py, chances are that others will be able to reproduce them.

    Your destination should always be as few clicks away as possible is what web dev has taught me. Why does gnome force you to open their overview, that screws with the entire screen to then open an app? In XFCE I just click the apps icon or use the app launcher, app launcher just uses the keyboard and the shortcut just uses the mouse. Gnome's attempt needs both the keyboard and mouse?

    Armavica,

    what git jargon do you find confusing? thinking of writing a blog post that explains some of git's weirder terminology: "detached HEAD state”, "fast-forward", "index/staging area/staged", “ahead of 'origin/main' by 1 commit”, etc

    (really only looking for terms that you personally find confusing, not terms that you think someone else might be confused about)

    Armavica,
    @Armavica@fosstodon.org avatar

    @b0rk The first time I used git, I wanted to see what a file looked like before my friend's last commit. From the name of the command, I thought that "git revert" would do that. So I somehow ended up reverting my friend's commit... English is not my first language, so the problem could be there. But I feel there are too many synonyms used for really different things: revert, restore, reset... And their man page often describes them using only this word, which really doesn't help!

    Breakfast for dinner. Caesar with bacon & eggs!

    Homemade croutons with & homemade Caesar dressing with anchovies & such, parmigiano, thick bacon, poached eggs.

    So… the trick for nice round, happy, smooth poached eggs like this?

    Crack them into a little strainer so the loose white drops off, jiggle it so the yolk is in the middle of the tight white, then drop it into your simmering vinegar water to poach. A little 5-star hotel poaching trick for ya. 😃
