What did you do during the pandemic? Did you pretend to work from home? Did you gain weight? Did you start minting NFTs?

@geomenke did none of that. Instead, he and his wife moved to Denmark and settled there -- new job, new language, new house, the works.

Read @rjhale1971 's interview with Kurt, 7 years after the first one:

Amazing interview with @adamsteer . @rjhale1971 is on a roll.

“This story is a hard one to write … and may be hard to read.” Adam shares his insight into the politics of academia (“fit the mold or you’re out. Don’t speak up or you’re out”), working as a migrant (“we found barriers to everything everywhere”), and other bumps on his road as a geospatial professional with a PhD.

Read the interview, then share it. Especially if you are securely employed.

I'm not sure what Bluesky Social is for. It seems like Jack wants to create another version of Twitter, which feels like old wine in a new bottle. Maybe he should just retire and let people enjoy without further dividing the community. The same goes to Threads net (another clone from Facebook). Ugh.

@nixCraft Jack left Bluesky in anger a few months ago.

In keeping with my 2024 New Year’s resolutions, I started an inverse bucket list – a Marie-Kondo-style list of things to get rid of. Not material things. Mostly mental and intangible things like maintaining presence on a social network, or a long-standing vague intention to do something.

A Möbius strip walks into a bar, crying.
The bartender asks, "What's the matter?"
The Möbius strip replies, "Oh, where do I even begin?"

My new policy is to immediately block users who reply to my posts with what I consider to be hyperbolic comments. They are of course free to take their carefully considered missives to other places where I'm sure they'll be welcome, but not on my threads. Thanks for your understanding of this policy.

AtanasE,
@AtanasE@mastodon.social avatar

@lauren What would be an example of a hyperbolic comment?

Google is too big to fail, and yet they seem to be failing at basic things they used to do well (like search) while removing useful features (like cache) and adding a bunch of crap nobody needs or wants.

Want to know if a given domain name shows up anywhere in search? Well screw you, we're not going to tell you that anymore, but here's 1,400 completely useless and irrelevant results that could possibly have some info (but don't). When the search engine could have done what it's done for years, and admit that it doesn't know WTF you're talking about and say "no results found." Now it just makes shit up if it doesn't know the answer.

Hey cool! My search result shows the term I was looking for is present on 7 websites. Shoot! None of them are online anymore. How about showing us your cached version of the site, you know the one that was used to create this search result? Oh wait, no, you can't see that anymore. Why? Here's Danny Sullivan's dismissive and mystifying explanation: "“It was meant for helping people access pages when way back, you often couldn’t depend on a page loading,” Sullivan wrote on X. “These days, things have greatly improved. So, it was decided to retire it.”

Want software? Great, Google will serve a malicious ad on top that looks a lot like an organic search result but which is paid for by scammers and installs malware.

    D: Can I work from home?

    Boss: No.

    D: Why?

    Boss: How would I know you would be working?

    D: How do you know I'm working when I'm here?

    Account security software design question: if a user has created an account with an email and password, and verified that email address (via clicking a link/entering a code in an email they sent you)... and then later they SSO "sign in with Google" from a Google account for that same email address, is it OK to grant them access to their previously created account without first requiring their password as an extra verification step?

    AtanasE,
    @AtanasE@mastodon.social avatar

    @simon The user has placed their trust in you. You should not delegate that trust to anyone else without explicitly requested by the user. "Sign with Google" does not constitute such request, IMHO. The issue is procedural, not technical.

    Similarly to the 1983 Doubled Die Reverse penny, which lacks a mint mark and because of that is worth about $5,000 today, the 2023 calendar, in a glaring error, did not mark Day (12/3), and will thus be worth millions in the not-so-distant future.

    Will the 2024 calendar repeat the error? Hedge your bets and order multiple copies before it's too late:
