“ 'The global orange juice industry is in crisis. The Florida industry has all but disappeared, and Brazilian groves are plagued by disease, rising costs, and unfavourable growing conditions, leaving global orange juice supplies at their lowest point in decades,' he said.”
@StillIRise1963 Here in California we are plagued by citrus greening disease. It caused by insects and is 100% fatal to all citrus trees.
My county, one of the biggest growers of lemons in the US, is now under quarantine. It's becoming a dire situation.
This was a fun one, so let's do it again. What is something you've learned that seems unlikely, even though you know it's true? Here's one I think about a lot:
Sight, while being something something many people are born with, is not an innate ability, but something we learn to do. People who were born blind or were blind for a long time, who get sight, have to learn to see.
@RickiTarr The entire population of South Dakota is the same as that of Columbus, OH.
My scientist niece has a dream job offer in SD. I have forewarned her. 😔
@Tengrain I also questioned the veracity of this story when I saw it for the first time, even mentioned my skepticism in a post.
Major news sources have confirmed it.
This woman represented US at the United Nations! All I have for her now is anger and disgust.
@TexasObserver
The mission
"The mission of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Correctional Institutions Division is to provide safe and appropriate confinement, supervision, rehabilitation and reintegration of adult felons..."
The reality
"Texas’s punitive ecology has mutated into a time-tested torture machine: an apparatus that doesn’t just create the conditions for the steady decline of sanity and humanity but foments a ruthless world..."
Millions of Americans live within one mile of an abandoned coal mine or an orphaned oil and gas well. These sites are environmental hazards that pollute backyards and community spaces.
Interior announced a nearly $55M investment in ND and WV to plug wells, address hazards, and create good-paying jobs.
@TonyStark When I moved to Ohio I discovered mine subsidence. Earth can shift around old mines. There are so many of them that locations may be unknown, so a third of counties require homeowners insurance to cover it. Also, according to a recent study, there are close to 200,000 abandoned oil and gas wells in Ohio alone. Only a small fraction have been plugged.
So grateful that the President is beginning to address these hazards. Hope that more states can be helped in the future.
@TonyStark Trump wants to completely dismantle the EPA. He has said it many times.
For anyone who cares about the environment the choice in November is clear #VoteBlue2024
@thepoliticalcat It will not be easy. Virtually everyone in the US depends on their creations. They have tremendous amounts of money and power. I really hope that there are better minds than mine working on solutions. It's an unprecedented situation and extremely dangerous.
