BottleOfAlkahest,

It looks like he has chrome pinned to his task bar in the bottom left.

BottleOfAlkahest,

The court ordered a new trial when it overturned the conviction. The DA can decide not to do a new trial if they want. Overturning a conviction is not necessarily the same as finding someone innocent.

BottleOfAlkahest,

Did you consider rehomng that puppy to a home with no cows? How is your first instinct to a dog living in a situation its unsuited to, “pull out a shot gun and blast it. Twice”. Putting the dog down should really be a last resort.

BottleOfAlkahest,

Isn’t lemm.ee still federated with hexbear? I used to have an account over there and fled to .world when the admin refused to stop apologizing for their God awful behavior.

BottleOfAlkahest,

And those millionaires typically won some sort of fame “lottery” (which has its own issues) like Pop Stars or something.

BottleOfAlkahest,

I do something not on my computer and leave the window thatcis loading up so that I don’t forget about it in the background. I know not all jobs have that option but maybe save any non computer tasks you do have until those moments.

BottleOfAlkahest,

I went to a school that is one multi story building. It’s not a big school though which may be why. Highly populated area probably don’t see things like that anymore .

BottleOfAlkahest,

In my experience as a player, your players aren’t expecting you to be Mercer. They also aren’t on any of his professional players “level” either. Besides they’re having more fun than if you were Mercer because they’re actually getting to play with they’re friends, and that’s worth more than all of Mercer/Brennan/Aabria/Murph’s DM experience combined.

BottleOfAlkahest,

It’s not toxic positivity to suggest that someone pick up a hobby when they’re no realistic chance of “making it big” in that hobby. Most hobby don’t have a “make it big” component and those that do 99% of people don’t make it so with your attitude why start at 3 either?

BottleOfAlkahest,

So it would only have been aninconvenience once every 2 weeks? Or you could have adjusted your grocery shopping to your situation…or gotten a wheeled cart…or any number of things.

I’ve lived in multiple 3rd floor walk-ups and I loved it (with a dog that had to go out regularly). If you have a physical limitation that prevents doing stairs it would be a nightmare and moving in and out isn’t great. Otherwise it’s really not bad, a tiny bit of exercise isn’t going to hurt an otherwise healthy adult.

BottleOfAlkahest,

You’re staying at much nicer hotels than I am. In my experience they don’t fully stock anything in the room anywhere.

BottleOfAlkahest,

Maybe not most of America but LA has some famously grueling traffic.

BottleOfAlkahest,

So yes a typo. The typo they are referring to isn’t the amount. It’s the fact that the article says the fine can stand in place of the prison sentence. Your link specifies the fine is “In addition” which means they get jail AND a fine.

What's a common occurrence in your hobby that you think shouldn't be?

For me it’s driving while under the influence. If you couldn’t tell, I like me some ganja. However I have long since held the belief that it is utterly insane to drive while under the influence of most substances, with maybe nicotine and caffeine being the exception. All too often I see other stoners smoking and driving,...

BottleOfAlkahest,

DnD is definitely one of those hobbies where each table is different and (as long as no one is being hurt) none of them are wrong. The toxicity some people bring to the table can scare away newer people entirely and that sucks for everyone. Less DnD people means we all get to play less DnD.

BottleOfAlkahest,

Seriously my adhd management system is basically “putting shit where I’ll trip over it” and then waiting to get sick of still deliberately stepping over/around the inconveniently placed item.

BottleOfAlkahest,

For the record Dominican Nuns are an official monastic sect recognized by the Catholic church. They were started in 1206 by Saint Dominic de Guzman and are one of the 5 largest monastic Catholic religious sects today*. So the Church didnt say “they arent us because they’re Dominicans.” They essentially said “we don’t recognize those women as Dominican nuns”.

Note:*I think they may move up even higher on the list if you include monks as well as nuns…since friars are medicant and not monastic but poor Claire’s are monastic? Someone with more knowledge of Catholic religious orders may know more.

BottleOfAlkahest,

So this happened in Olympic skeet shooting, it used to be coed, then in the early 90s where a women won so they split the competition moving forward into men and women.

Olympic Pistol and Rifle were split in the 80s because a women tied a man (he even won the tie breaker). In pistol and rifle the women course of fire is less than the men’s so you can’t directly compare them either.

BottleOfAlkahest,

A lot of nuts are very high water usage crops. It’s a gallon per almond but almost five for a walnut.

BottleOfAlkahest,

The name of the rose. The movies…fine, I guess. The books at least 300 pages too long and frequently segues into long-winded discussion of the political minutiae of the warring monastic orders during the reign of Pope John XXII.

If you want to read about the time period you’ll be annoyed by the murder mystery shoehorned into your dry long winded historical fiction. If you wanted a murder mystery set in a historical setting then you’ll be annoyed by the history lesson being shoved down your throat like a dehydrated fig newton.

Migrant Farmworker who survived mass shooting at Northern California mushroom farm sues company and owner (apnews.com)

Pedro Romero Perez, 24, was in the shipping container that served as his and his brother’s home at California Terra Gardens in Half Moon Bay when authorities say Chunli Zhao barged in and opened fire, killing his brother Jose Romero Perez and shooting him five times, including once in the face....

BottleOfAlkahest,

This is also why it’s so ridiculous that the far right is always hosting about illegal immigrants “stealing” jobs. No they fucking aren’t, US citizens aren’t being turned away from migrant farm work in droves because no one actually wants to be treated that way and US citizens have protections and recourse.

BottleOfAlkahest,

Isn’t it true that a lot of stock dips down after an initial IPO high? Even if the company is solid? I’m not sure this isn’t typical or even expected behavior for even well run companies.

BottleOfAlkahest,

For a woman who wrote “it matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be.” She seems awful fucking concerned with what categroies people were born into.

If only there was an epic saga about the conquering power of love over bigotry that she could read. Maybe one involving a boy who lives or some fantastic magical beasts?

My mom uses Linux, btw

I installed Debian + KDE on my mom’s laptop. She hasn’t had a complaint since. How tech-savvy is she, you ask? I’m sitting with her right now, so out of politeness she put on headphones to watch her favorite soap opera. Mind you, the headphones weren’t plugged into the laptop. She was sitting there, headphones on her...

BottleOfAlkahest,

I buy a new laptop and I open it. It’s running windows as soon as I turn it on. How is that easier than having to go find something to install? If I turned on a brand new laptop and it was running Linux then I’d just use Linux. I wouldn’t bother going to find windows to download it either.

BottleOfAlkahest,

Yeah, that’s kinda my point. Why would I? If it came on laptops out of the box? I’d use it. But as someone whose job description lists excel as “a plus, not required” Why would I have installed Linux in the past 10 years?

BottleOfAlkahest,

I have never had to ask someone for help with my laptop even after an update. As far as I can tell my PC isnt slow and Ive never noticed spam. I just don’t use/push my laptop enough for that to have ever been a problem.

That said, if someone installed Linux for me and set it up? I’d use Linux. The operating system really doesn’t impact my use of the laptop. The point I’ve been trying to make, and that seems to be largely being lost on the angry Linux bros on lemmy, is that using Linux isn’t the barrier and most people would use Linux- if it came pre-installed. Installation is the barrier, not use. If you put it on family/friends computers they’ll probably use it just fine. They just aren’t gonna bother learning to install it themselves.
