CameronDev,

I’m not a parent, but my solution to tantrums is to send my imaginary little fucker to the local coal mine for the rest of the year. Have you tried that?

Do i need /s? :D

CameronDev,

Its way to late to fix, but instance => community and subreddit => subcommunities would have kept some of the nomenclature similar.

And instances being a community seems to be how beehaw and others want to work anyway.

CameronDev,

Well, yeah, like I said, way to late to change. Programmers are notoriously bad at naming things, but once named, its hard to change.

It might have made the “Which instance do I join?” question a bit more intuitive and self-answerable if it was instead:

Q: Which community do I join? A: Oh, obvious, the one that seems to match my IRL community/values.

(If its not obvious, I am also a programmer, so any opinions on usability and human behaviour are also completely detached from reality 😄)

CameronDev,

Do you bring your ranked energy to casuals? I’ve been on the other side of this for League. Playing with someone who is going to get sweaty and intense in a game I am not great at is not fun.

CameronDev,

If you are lower skill, why are you suggesting ranked? Maybe he feels pressure to perform and carry you?

CameronDev,

Self host it. Their hosted version has KYC requirements, same as Zoom etc. The self-hosted version has none of that.

CameronDev,

Communication platforms are going to be abused by organised crime, pedofiles and all kinds of unsavoury people. KYC rules mean that if a platform finds that kind of content, they can report it to the appropriate authorities.

I dont know whether its by a law, or something else, but even if you self host its a good idea to know who your users are and what they are doing.

CameronDev,

Aussies are just Yanks slathered in vegemite :D

CameronDev,

Yeah, pretty friendly i think. Kiwis and Canadians might be friendlier, but we are close.

CameronDev,

11 years later…

CameronDev,

Unfortunately, she choked on a grape and died :(

CameronDev, (edited )

I think its probably an in-joke we (and the reddit downvoters) are not getting. I probably would have upvoted it assuming it was a joke.

CameronDev,

Luigis Mansion 3 has a pretty overt acknowledgement of the Virtual Boys existance. The entire in game menu is in one.

CameronDev,

To be fair, we only know of this one. There may well be other open source backdoors floating around with no detection. Was heartbleed really an accident?

How should I do backups?

I have a server running Debian with 24 TB of storage. I would ideally like to back up all of it, though much of it is torrents, so only the ones with low seeders really need backed up. I know about the 321 rule but it sounds like it would be expensive. What do you do for backups? Also if anyone uses tape drives for backups I am...

CameronDev,

It depends on the value of the data. Can you afford to replace them? Is there anything priceless on there (family photos etc)? Will the time to replace them be worth it?

If its not super critical, raid might be good enough, as long as you have some redundancy. Otherwise, categorizing your data into critical/non-critical and back it up the critical stuff first?

CameronDev,

Its not, but if the value of the data is low, its good enough. There is no point backing up linux isos, but family photos definitely should be properly backed up according to 3-2-1.

CameronDev,

I’m not convinced the VPNs actually make financial sense, I kinda wonder if there is someone funding them. They market so aggressively, and are priced so cheaply it doesnt quite make sense to me.

CameronDev,

That happens to my filament as well, i assumed it was drying out to much. Your humidity is way lower then mine, i’m typically around 50%. Not sure that this is the reason though

CameronDev,

I knew the trans agenda was to get rid of bridges. Wakeup sheeple!!!2!!?

Some might be paid actors, but i bet a lot are just brain rotted morons.

As a linux user, do you know about/use openwrt?

I have many nerdy friends who have been Linux users for ages. But most of them don’t know such a thing as Openwrt exists or have never bothered to give it a try. It’s a very fun piece of software to play with and can be extremely useful for routing traffic. Wondering why it isn’t more popular/widely used.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/JPEG_XL

It was mainly based on a combination of a proposal called PIK,[9] submitted by Google, and a proposal called FUIF[10] — itself based on FLIF — submitted by Cloudinary.

I dont know why Google is not supporting it, but it is their format.

Edit: removed insensitive comment.

CameronDev,

You’re right, my sincerest apologies.

CameronDev,

Regarding home server, get yourself a Raspberry Pi. Doesnt need to be the latest one, whatever you can find. You can install linux and get yourself a webserver up and running in no time. Check out any of the selfhosting communites for more ideas. Be aware that this is not really programming, its more system administration, although the line can get blurry.

As for arduino, my advice is to hop on aliexpress, and get some ESP32 dev boards (Comes with wifi, bluetooth, and supported by arduino IDE. RP2040 also viable), and some sensors (temp, humidity, airquality, whatever, displays?). Work out how to interface the sensors with the esp32 to output the sensor values to a webpage (or some other interface). All the parts are inexpensive, so I suggest getting multiples as youll probably kill one or two when wiring them up. Youll probably need dupont jumper cables as well, and maybe access to a soldering iron, but you should be able to go a long way with dev boards.

I personally find learning by doing is going to be better than reading books and articles, but your learning style may be different.

CameronDev,

No wifi is fine, my first arduino was a regular one, but I’ve found that its kinda limited. Making an LED blink is a bit dull. But given it has a screen, you can probably display the sensor data on it, so its probably worth starting with it? Like i said, parts are inexpensive, so upgrading later is a recompile away.
